Zassenhaus Coffee Grinder 156BU is a quality product that appears to be made to the highest standards. It certainly looks and feels as if it will last for many, many years and it was a pleasure to see an imported product so well-made and thoughtfully designed. I bought it to grind coffee in case of a power failure but it's so beautifully designed and the coffee ground in it so delicious that I will be displaying it in my kitchen and will be using it frequently. It takes about one minute to grind enough beans for two cups of coffee made in a French press. The handle mechanism is sturdy and is easy to turn. You may find holding it between the knees (as suggested by other buyers) while seated easier but this is not necessary to use it. I am going to attach 4 sticky backed round bumpers to the bottom of mine to keep it from moving on the counter.

I really enjoy the quiet grinding of coffee using this little manual grinder, as opposed to the earsplitting whir of electric grinders in the early morning. It is adjustable, so you can run the gamut from the coarse grinds you need for French presses to much finer grinds. Seems well made, although it does have some plastic parts. My only complaint, which is minor, is that the knurled knob you use to adjust the fineness of the grind fits rather loosely, so it is always slipping out of adjustment. You need to check it regularly.

I too fell inlove with my grinder as did any visitors. It was a beautiful relationship of man and machine. Sailing on weekends and weeks full of business travel. Why is this in the past? Because the grinder did in fact become dull. It was after a lot of use but nothing bothered me more than having a beautiful piece of equipment and not being able to get it repaired. If you look at the grinding pieces there is no way to sharpen the cutting edge. If anybody has found a way to do so I would love to purchase another Z grinder but I cant buy another knowing it will end up in the trash after 3 or 4 years of heavy use.

zassenhaus grinders originated in 1851 germany if memory serves me, so it is folly to give them a negative rating
these machines are one of the few purchases that you will make in the 21st century that serve as family heirlooms to be passed down from generation to generation.
basically the only knock one would have about this grinder is their expectation of what it does. if the purchaser of this manual grinder expects to grind 12 cups worth of coffee beans in 2 minutes they are expecting too much. this grinder can produce enough grinds for 2-5 ounce cups of coffee in about 2 minutes at auto-drip fineness.
i bought it initially, as a poor-man's espresso grinder for 45 bucks in 2000. after my curiosity waned for things espresso it collected dust, until recently when i purchased a bonavita 5 cup drip maker. fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you view coffee, brewing coffee grinds at the proper temperature brings out the worst in a coffee bean when the grinds are not of a consistent size, such as those grinded by a blade type grinder, which basically just chops them, instead of pulverizing them like they need to be for maximum and proper extraction-flavor.
so until my electric burr grinder arrives later this week the zassenhaus hand mill is serving coffee grinding duty

I bought this exact grinder 2 or 3 years ago after having the motors on two grinders burn out on me. Needless to say, that isn't going to be a problem with this grinder. It's also a beautiful looking precision machine that looks so much better than a grinder with an electric cord hanging out.
