5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff...but don't buy it here!!!, November 3, 2011
This review is from: Zatarain's Root Beer Extract, 4-Ounce Plastic Bottles (Pack of 12) (Grocery)
This is the best rootbeer extract on the market. However, you can you to the Zatarain's website and buy it for $1.66 each if you get 12, or $2.00 if you only buy 1. The price here is nuts.

After finding a good root beer recipe online we purchased a 12-4oz. bottle pack of Zatarain's root beer extract and tried our hand at making root beer. After 4 days we put our root beer in the fridge. The next day we tried it. WOW!! It's the best root beer that I've ever had. Not only was it fun to make but it was easy too. I definately give Zatarain's five stars.

We've used Zatarain's Root Beer Extract for many years. Instead of adding yeast and waiting and all that, we just make a gallon or so at a time, using cold water, a teaspoon or two of the Root Beer Extract, and some sugar or other sweetener to taste...voila, instant, delicious Root Beer! You can also add Zatarain's Root Beer Extract to carbonated water if you like bubbly drinks, or you can fill a large glass with root beer and some ice cream for a delicious Ice Cream Float.

Be careful when adding or mixing this stuff, a little goes a long way. After many years of using Zatarain's Root Beer Extract, we've learned that it tasts better when you add a bit less than you think you need...you can always add a drop or two more if it tastes too weak. And be sure you start off with decent water...filtering your water helps the taste.

If they ever take Zatarain's Root Beer Extract off the market, I'll be heart-broken.

Enjoy!

If you want an old fashion root beer taste there is nothing better. We use it at our snow cone stand, but also at home. A bit of a hint, if you'll make it in an aluminum pitcher there and refrigerate it will be amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zatarain's Root Beer - Good stuff, November 30, 2010

Very good stuff. I was doing the brew method for a while, but read that reusing plastic bottles is not good for you. I was planning to get ahold of some Groelsch bottles, but they are pretty expensive (just as expensive empty at brewering shops...). So, having 10 bottles of concentrate, I decided to just add to some club soda. Not a great idea, since the sugar makes all of the carbonation go away. Could probably disolve in water then chill and add, but went with a plan B. Add 2-3 tablespoons to a 2 litre of cream soda. Comes out pretty good, with a touch of vanilla too.

I bought a case of this last Nov. I thought it would last forever but it was gone by Jan. I made it by the gal. with just sugar/sweetner and water. My family loved it! My only regret is that I didn't buy more. I haven't been able to get it again since then.

I bought the 12 pack and was going to do a foodie workshop to make root beer, but it's so easy to make, no workshop instruction needed. My first batches were with bakers yeast and it did have a slightly yeasty taste. I switched to Champagne brewers yeast and it's awesome.

I have tried many different root beer extracts and I like Zatarain's the best so far. I use a little less than the amount recommended and am very pleased with the results. I will be buying this again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Flavor, Heavy on the Licorice, August 18, 2009

I thought this flavoring made a very good batch of rootbeer and my family are root beer fanatics. I had to doctor it up a bit as the flavor is not quite as strong as some root beer concentrates, but the overall product is a good place to start to make 'your own' signature rootbeer. I added some brown sugar and vanilla to tone down the heavy licorice flavor (anise to be perfectly correct) that comes through. I will be buying this again as it is a very good value compared to other products out on the market that are not any better, only more expensive.

Excellent product--makes great root beer! It's an easy process--just add sugar and yeast in a 2 liter bottle with the extract. Fill with water, and wait a few days, and you have great tasting, rich and creamy root beer! It was a hit at my one-room school house demonstrations recently, as root beer was around in the late 1800's.

My only complaint really would be the shipping--the box arrived smelling strongly of root beer--the majority of the bottles had leaked, making them unsellable for me. It's going to take me quite awhile to use up all 12 bottles of extract now on my own...
