Editorial Reviews

Featuring Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Woody Shaw, Miroslav Vitous, Hubert Laws, and Jack DeJohnette
Keyboardist Joe Zawinul is certainly best known for his work with the trailblazing jazz outfit Weather Report. Although the group's debut recording wouldn't come out until a year later, Zawinul represents the first time that founding members Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, and bassist Miroslav Vitous recorded together, and the combination would serve up truly groundbreaking results.

Although Zawinul first recorded his classic composition In a Silent Way with Miles Davis one year earlier, he reinterprets it here as a more complexly orchestrated piece, realizing his own vision of this brilliant work. This track, in addition to the song Double Image, stand as a direct link between Miles's early electric work and Weather Report, thus setting the stage for nearly every eclectic contemporary jazz effort that followed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich and Unique May 23, 2002
Format:Audio CD
The unique instrumentation on Joe Zawinul's first solo recording combines with some of his most powerful compositions to make for a particularly rich listening experience. A sense of hushed beauty pervades, with tone colors washing over subtle and complex subrhythms. Liking watching water move in a pool, this album rewards contemplation without clamoring for attention.
Musicians:- Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock (keyboards), George Davis, Hubert Laws (flutes), Woody Shaw, Jimmy Owens (trumpets), Earl Turbinton, Wayne Shorter (soprano saxes), Miroslav Vitous, Walter Booker (basses), Joe Chambers, Billy Hart, David Lee, Jack DeJohnette (percussion)

5.0 out of 5 stars World Music Visionary November 2, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Sadly Joe Zawinul has left this plane of existence but he has left us a rich collection of his music. Considered by many to be a musical genius(I would concurr)he cut his jazz teeth by playing with bands led by Julian "Cannoball" Adderly, Why Am I Treated So Bad!, than moved on to begin his fusion period with Miles Davis, The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions, formed his own group with Wayne Shorter, the great Weather Report Mysterious Traveller, Black Market and than went on to a solo career. Always the prolific composer, he was known early on in his career as Josef Zawinul, he created some great music in the jazz repertoire. He played piano and but was best know for his electric piano work that he often shared on single tracks with other electric keyboardists like Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. This disc features both Herbie Hancock and Zawinul, each playing electric piano. The first track, entitled "Doctor Honoris Causa" was recorded in honor of Herbie Hancock for his Honorary Doctorate at Grinnell University. It is a spatial delight where the concepts for two keyboards are stretched to the limits with lingering notes that intermingle. The music is spacey in that it never takes off, remains in a state of quietude, flows along it's melodic path with occasional bursts of high energy that are maintained by the structure of the two keyboards. It is a forerunner to the signature sound of Weather Report. It is an extended song in the 15 minute range that takes the listener on a journey. Read more ›

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, Interesting, but not focused. Maybe 3.5? November 10, 2004
By R G-S
Format:Audio CD
Joe Zawinul's self-titled album is the weakest of the three "Pre-Weather Report Weather Report" albums, by the founding members, but only because the competition, (Vitous' "Infinite Search" (aka "Mountain in the Clouds") and Shorter's "Odyssey of Iska" )is so brilliant as to leave almost anything else in shadow.

On the two extended pieces, "Double Image" and "Dr. Honoris", (the latter, which became an early WR signature piece, making its debut on record) Zawinul and Hancock explore the sonic extremes of the Rhodes Piano-echoplex-ring modulator combo, which started to become the identifying sound color in fusion at this point; three or four years later, they'd both be behind banks of synths. The wind players take good atmospheric solos; Woody Shaw's work on "Dr." is particularly good. The rhythm section cooks. But just when these tunes start to nail themselves down and WORk, they "slip out of focus" again and again.

The short pieces, however, Zawinul's programatic "soundscape" experiments, didn't work for me when this came out, and still don't work for me. The "Silent Way" reading on Miles' album always beat this version, and "Last Journey" and "New York" are interesting, but failed.

So, it belongs in a reasonably conmplete collection of fusion, but not in the first ten.

5.0 out of 5 stars Core of Weather Report March 4, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Regardless of the contribution other greats as Wayne, Milosrav, Jaco, Alphonso, Peter, Alex, Omar, the core part of the great fusion band is made by JZ, which are shown in this album.
