An unbalanced member of an Outreaching LA Fundamentalist church which is deeply involved in the Community not only becomes obsessed religiously but also with an attractive girl in the Congregation. The story unfolds to its tragic conclusion through accounts of what happened written to his assessing psychiatrist while he awaits trial for the serious offence resulting from his obsession. The author does a great job of entering the central character's mind.
An excellent and somewhat disturbing read.

what I would call a religious take off which exposes how the doctrine of the church becomes embedded in those that seek compassion, understanding and help in the times of loss and stress.

The character in this book is a mere child who is not given the help he needs in dealing with the death of his father and believes that God has spoken to him and that he must adhere to his wishes which in the end results in him taking actions orchestrated by the voices in his head after committing various crimes.
The character portrayed is a very delusional man, easily swayed by other peoples actions yet believing himself to be a savior.

Unfortunately things spiral out of control and in doing gods work he ends up committing murder of those he sought to save.

Zealot is a captivating read that exposes the inner turmoil of a confused man. His journey takes him on the hunt for a potential terrorist, the love of a woman torn between sin and redemption, and the ultimate prize - approval from his God.
Readers who have had any church experience can easily identify with Paul's compassion for his faith and desire to do right in the eyes of his maker. The inner struggle that Etchison describes as Paul's world and faith are tested to the extreme is engaging. Is he guided by God? Or, is he just a lunatic that has gone too far?

I think it is close to being sacriligious. It was not what I expected, however some of the previews could have been misleading.
