Just the Right Balance: Not Too Obscure, Not Overplayed, July 22, 2007
This review is from: Zealous Records Presents: Soul Sides 2 (Audio CD)
As with
Zealous Records Presents: Soul Sides, Vol. 1, soul-sides.com blogger Oliver Wang strikes just the right balance with this compilation--including neither ultra-obscure sides of interest only to collectors, nor overplayed "classics" you'll hear on commercial radio.
Some of these tracks are the definitive soul covers of very popular songs. Al Green's "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and Sharon Cash's "Fever" take their respective songs to totally new places. Other tracks are less than definitive, but exhibit a charm that makes them deserving of an audience all the same. The vocals on West Coast Revival's "Feelin' Alright" don't measure up to Joe Cocker's better-known cover, but the deep, groovy pocket on their take will make you get out of your seat all the same. Likewise, Laura Lee's take on "What a Man" is no replacement for Linda Lyndell's original, but not because there's anything truly wrong with it; and Esther Phillips' version of "Home Is Where the Hatred Is" woke me up to a Gil Scott-Heron song I'd overlooked.
Not every track is a winner in my book, but even the weakest are worth a listen. I think any of my fellow soul aficionados who aren't already hardcore vinyl collectors should find something new here to make this compilation worthwhile.
