1) put ink cartridge in. make sure you hear a small click sound.
2) soak nib/wick in hot water
3) place nib at 45 degree angle (whatever works really) on paper towel/paper/etc so that you can see the water coming out and leaving wet marks
4) do this until the ink is running black/blue. scribbling helps move it faster too

-once it gets going it works great. just a pain in the @$$ to get going
-the idea is to get the water soaked all the way up the wick to where the ink is, therefore pulling the water out simultaneously pulls the ink with it. at first it will be watered down but will gradually get darker.

I've gone through half of the first cartridge and have yet to have any problems. 5 stars once it works

This pen was very frustrating to write with. It does say that as you write, it will sort of learn your style and work better the longer you use it. Well after giving it a go for a good week now, I can tell you that this is a load of BS. I did find however, that the pen works great with the fountain tip upside down on the paper, vs the way you should write with a fountain pen.

You get less.

Hypothesis:
The tip of the pen is thin, poor quality steel. Pushing down on the pen in the proper direction spreads the two sides of the tip apart, which dries up the channel, therefore eliminating the capillary action which is required in order for the pen to work. Pushing down on the tip while it is upside-down closes up the channel, making the pen work. This is probably the main cause of the reports of the pen only working upside-down. Unfortunately, the steel is really low quality and has a non-existent elastic range. This means that pushing down on the pen in the proper direction causes permanent deformation which spreads the two sides of the tip apart forever.

I would have paid an extra $2 for this pen if the tip was constructed well, because it would have worked perfectly fine.

The pen is a sturdy, reliable, inexpensive fountain pen that looks good, too. The problem is not the pen, but the cartridge. It is a design/mfg. defect that allows the little plastic/glass bead (that is pushed in when the cartridge is inserted) to roll back and stop the ink flow. A converter is one solution to the problem. The other is to clean out the cartridge, insert a paper clip with a small amount of pure silicone sealant onto the bead. The cartridge should be in an upright position, which will allow the bead to rest on the bottom (of the cartridge). You are gluing the bead to the bottom of the cartridge. Let the silicone dry for 24 hours, before refilling cartridge with ink. I did this and the pen works like a charm.

I may have written a review about the pen before. I have had several for a long time. Like some of the other reviewers have said, it does take a moment or two to get the ink to flowing, but once that happens it is a good pen to write with on most types of paper. I personally have not had an issue....and, I do use different types of paper, notebook, pads, etc. You can even put the pen aside for awhile and it does not dry out like some, more expensive pens, will do. I have a good selection of pens hat I love writing with, but this one I ot only like writing with, but I am never afraid if someone walk off with, or I lose it (has happened). I usually purchase in a local Walgreen for about $4.00 with two bonus refills.

I would love to give this pen 5-stars, but here is my issue. Purchasing refills is very difficult. So far, I have not found a international, or generic cartridge that will fit this pen. You can find the refills on Amazon, but two refills cost more than the original pen. That seems a little out of line to me. For me it is cheaper to just purchase another package (pen with refils).

My suggestions: (1) make refills available in the stores, and for the sake of customers, especially students, do not over price them. (2) make both the pen and refills available in more stores, and on Amazon. (3) I know there is blue ink cartridges (with pen) available....I purchased on a few months back (on Amazon)....so make them available so that people have a choice.

I have purchased the pen to given to kids, and teens who have all fallen in love with it....and then the heart break when can't find cartridges...... shame, shame, shame on Zebra.

Let me preface this review by saying that this is the first fountain pen I have ever used, and I am only a casual pen aficionado. So if you are a connoisseur of fountain pens, ignore this review, because I am not writing it from your perspective. This is from the perspective of a typical guy who merely appreciates an above-average pen, but is not willing to spend more than a few bucks on one.

I picked up the V-301 because I enjoy using Zebra's M- and F-301 writing utensils, and was interested in trying a fountain pen. I have very small handwriting, so I appreciate pens that are very fine and are smooth to write with. Like many other reviewers, I experienced the same headaches trying to get the ink flowing. It took many minutes of scribbling and fighting to be able to start writing. Note to Zebra: this is not a good first impression, especially since I was in an important meeting and had to make everyone wait while I fought with my fancy new pen.

Once the ink made its way down the nib (finally), I tried to determine the correct orientation with which to write. I had always seen people using fountain pens with the nib up, but this resulted in a very thick, messy line that sputtered out after only a few letters. Surely this couldn't be how a fountain pen is supposed to work, is it? I tried flipping the pen around, so I was writing with the other side of the nib, and behold!, the pen writes much, much better this way. The line it creates is extremely fine, perfect for writing with my tiny letters, and the ink flows smoothly and freely.

Again, I cannot compare this to any other fountain pens, but I will say that this is the nicest pen I have written with, when used this way.
