Editorial Reviews

Review

"There is no doubt that this volume will provide an essential reference for those researchers who wish to embark on genetic studies in zebrafish. Generally, the protocols are comprehensive with a low level of assumed knowledge and it is this consideration that will make this book indispensable to any laboratory about to attempt a particular technique for the first time. In many cases protocols are described by people who were involved in the development of the techniques, who are therefore able to provide useful hints, trouble shooting advice and time estimates for individual procedures. An example of the high standard of contributions to this volume is the outstanding chapter summarizing positional cloning of mutated genes in the zebrafish. This provides an excellent overview and step-by-step guide, with some protocols, and references to seven other chapters of the book, for those wanting greater details on various aspects. Another laudable contribution is the section covering transgenesis of zebrafish by the microinjection of plasmid DNA. This clear and concise chapter, with detailed protocols, materials listings, diagrams and photographs, enables the establishment of zebrafish transgenesis as a technique in any laboratory."
-TRENDS IN GENETICS

"...an essential purchase for any lab using or contemplating the zebrafish as a model system."

From the Back Cover

The Zebrafish: Genetics and Genomics presents laboratory protocols and reviews that focus on Danio rerio, the tropical, freshwater fish that has emerged as an extremely powerful molecular-genetic model system for analysis of vertebrate development. This volume describes strategies and methods for genetic screening to obtain developmental mutants and techniques for mapping mutations and cloning the causative genes. Accessible to novices and "old hands" alike, this volume provides a comprehensive reference to current genetic and genomic approaches in zebrafish.
Also available is the companion volume, Zebrafish: Biology, which describes the embryology of the zebrafish, presents methods for cell culture and for the study of gene expression and function in development, highlights cellular techniques for analysis of morphogenesis, and concludes with protocols for the study of, and descriptions of mutations that perturb organogenesis.
