4.0 out of 5 stars A messy movie, but a fun messy movie, March 26, 2006
This review is from: Zebraman (2 Disc Edition) (DVD)
Ok, I actually have the 1 DVD set so I can't comment on the extras (save for the trailers that seem fine) but this movie reminded me of Indestructible in a strange way. It's like the fun poppy Andrew Lloyd Weber version of Indestructible. Both movies deal with ordinary guys who find out that they are superheroes. Both movies concentrate more on their dystopic families and their failures as fathers than on the hero bit and both posit redemption as a matter of acting like a superhero.

This one is less concerned with comic book obsessions than televisoin. The teacher character is so obsessed with Zebraman, a cheesy 70s era superhero show that he actually sews the costume for himself. When a boy in a wheel chair shows up with the same obsession, they forge a weird bond made palatible only by the existence of real aliens (and the strangely unexplained way that the costume works for him whenever he gets into a fight with the aliens)

Somewhere in the middle it starts just throwing things at the audience as if even the director didn't know what to do with it, but it's just strange enough that you forgive it its excesses (including the 3-4 false endings)
