Those reviews are about the Fox Lorber release which is dubbed. This is not that DVD. This is the Tokyoshock release with it's original language and subtitles.

Zeiram is truly one of the great success of Keita Amemiya (which didn't direct only masterpieces, believe me, A moon over Tao, to quote only one). If you consider his low budget, you can say Amemiya truly used it smartly because it's not that different from american successes of the time, honestly (however, the sequel would be unfortunaly very inferior).

Of course, it's a classic story in the beginning : a female bounty hunter who hunts a dangerous alien and must ally herself with two losers to succeed. But Amemiya has the intelligence to change the usual cliche. Here, the girl is not sexy as hell, she's even very masculinised with a bodybuilded armor and she uses a strong language, not the kind to hide beyond men. And the monster Zeiram, although he's really scary, has lots of feminine/motherly aspects, especially when he transforms.

Second aspect, by the way : although he reminds a bit Predator at the beginning, he finally becomes more hideous, reminding more Ridley Scott's Alien finally. Consequently the style of the movie, purely based on action, changes to take a more horrific form. That's the proof of Amemiya's great talent. Zeiram is really crual, even towards the creatures he /she creates. For me, it's the perfect villain/ness ^^. You'll like to fear it!

Honestly, you don't see that kind of great scifi-movie so often nowadays so I truly recommand it. Enjoy !

Nice reissue of the Zeiram movie with Japanese track and English subs for those who don't care for dubs. Nice compliment to Zeiram II and the animated version IRIA

I did not see this movie with overly high expectations.
My demands for a movie are fairly rigid. Whatever happens must be within the bounds of the world that is portrayed. As long as this consistency is maintained I am willing to suspend disbelief to what occurs.
It is well made, well written, the acting is good (but why do these movies ALWAYS need a comic relief character?).
I was actually impressed with how well the story was told, how the contrivances of the story were incorporated and made perfect sense within the the boundaries of the story. The characters and dialogue were believable for the story.
Zeiram is not the first but the second movie in this story.
The first is the anime Iria. Iria: Zeiram the Animation - Complete Series (Limited Edition Collector's Tin)
There is also a second live action film - Zeiram II The Zeiram Duology (Zeiram 1&2 Double Feature).

It's a simple and well done sci-fi monster movie, like the Godzilla sequels only better. The plot revolves around 2 delivery men who play the dumb sidekicks, a girl bounty hunter from space and a near un-killable monster who seems to die but keeps coming back. It mixes sci-fi and martial arts a bit with a great monster and a plausible story. The monster has to be isolated in an alternate dimension that looks like the original city but without people where it can be defeated. The story goes from there as the trio try to capture or defeat the monster. Very much like the Godzilla sequels but much better than almost all of them. Deserving of cult status. There is a Zeiram 2 that's almost as good.
