Book Description

Devils on Horseback October 1, 2009
A cool man, a fiery woman, a love destined to ignite. Intense, reserved and known for his strategic thinking, Zeke Blackwood has struggled to find his place in the post-war world. Naomi Tucker is a survivor, a woman who made it through the war on her own wit and strength. The wildness of the West is far from tamed. It threatens Zeke's fragile relationship with Naomi. As Zeke's hold on sobriety slips, he and Naomi must choose between settling for half a life apart, or embracing all they could be. Together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zeke-A Joyfully Recommended Title!!, January 4, 2010
This review is from: Zeke (Devils on Horseback) (Paperback)
Zeke Blackwood is the most tortured of the men known as the Devils on Horseback. Ever since the first woman he loved died a violent death, Zeke has hidden his pain behind the glass of a whisky bottle. Never sober for long and craving alcohol hourly, Zeke tries to wash away his pain to no avail. However, others see in Zeke what he can't and the town offers him the position of town sheriff - If he can stay sober and if he can leave the saloon girls alone. Zeke does his best to stay sober; it is a daily trial. When he sees Naomi Tucker, a new girl in town, he is intrigued and interested. When she becomes the first person he arrests as the new sheriff he becomes aroused and they spend her jail time in the most naughty of ways. The past has a way of catching up to everyone and Zeke and Naomi are no different. Zeke's battle with alcohol is far from over and Naomi's own demons threaten their newfound relationship, Zeke and Naomi must decide which is more important - having a life that they both have only dreamed of or giving in to the very things that Zeke is trying to avoid.

Beth Williamson sucker punched me with this one. I ached for Zeke and his disease. And it was a disease. Unable to remain sober even though he was one of the most loyal of men, Zeke tore my heart out more than once. I just wanted to reach in to the pages of Devils on Horseback - Zeke and grab him and hold him close. His and Naomi's love burned brighter than any star and I am glad they found each other.

Grab the tissues ladies and indulge yourself with this wonderful Western romance. No one can write a western like Beth Williamson and Devils on Horseback - Zeke is just an amazing read. I hated to finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner by Williamson, November 20, 2009
This review is from: Zeke (Devils on Horseback) (Paperback)
Beth Williamson has become a favorite of mine on immediate "to buy" status. I have enjoyed every book she has put out, especially the western's. She is one of the few writers who can completly suck me into a new world until the novel is finished, and then I mourn the loss.

Zeke, the third story about the infamous "Devils on Horseback", picks up where JAKE (book 2) left off. Zeke, a haunetd man after watching the woman he loved murdered in front of him, finds himself unable to find solace unless its at the bottom of a whiskey bottle. Friends and family despite their best efforts cant seem to shake him off his acholic lifestyle that is heading straight for self destruction. One last effort places him in the position of Sheriff, hoping to finally give him something to live for.

Enter Naomi. A woman with a past, too much pride and a mouth that won't quit. As usal in Ms. Williamson's novels, there are fireworks between her 2 protagonists. And though at times I did find Naomi a bit one dimendional in the beginning of the story, and very often overbearing and annoying when she flashed her "feminist Nazi" underoos, she improved through the course of the story. She is NO Gabby (the heroine from Jake), but she seemed to provide a good contrats for Zeke and his particular trials and tribulations by the end of the novel. Overall, this was a wonderful story of love, and redemption.

Zeke was an interesting character; the epitomy of the hardened cowboy with a heart buried deep beneath the layers of pain and experience. He was very multi dimensional and we saw the sort of man he was not through only his eyes but through those of hfamily and friends who sacrificed so much for him, asurign us even at his low points that he was one worth fighting for.

I found the theme of alchoholism an interesting one to tackle in the setting and it was handled well. The secondary characters as usual are remarkably well flashed out and really help with the building of a world, not just a book.

I can't wait for the next one. There was some VERY interesting groundwork subtly laid out in this book, so I cannot wait to see what the 4th book holds.

If you love cowboys and westerns and are a sucker for a love story that isn't always pretty but extremely satisfing, do not miss this one!

NOTE* You MUST read Devils on Horseback (Book 2) Jake by Beth Williamson , before you read this one so you understand alot of the groundwork. Nate, not so much as that book occurs before the characters move to Tanger. All the characters in Zeke, were introduced in Jake and though there are recaps, it's still not really enough.
