Spend a little extra and get another tablet because this one is SO not worth the money.

No matter how good the deal seems, one thing I have learned in the tech industry is, if you buy cheap you get nothing but headaches and frustration.

I bought a Zeki 7-inch tablet a couple of weeks ago through Amazon and so far I love it. Thanks for all of the honest reviews that helped me make the decision!

There were some things I was concerned about before I bought it. In order for it to be more than just a geeky toy, I wanted one of those keyboard cases so I could use it for my writing. There were comments here and elsewhere saying that it might not work. Well, I am here to tell you that it works perfectly! But there is a bit of a trick to it.

Here's the story. The tablet and the keyboard case showed up within a week of ordering. The tablet has a female mini USB connector and the keyboard has a standard, full size male USB connector. I bought a gender changer (female to female) and used that with the cable that came with the tablet. Nothing. I tried every combination of cable and adapter that I had, including a powered USB hub, all with no luck. I confirmed that the keyboard worked by plugging it into my PC. I had seen in a couple of forum posts that at least a two people had gotten it to work, but they gave no details; they said they plugged it in and it worked. I e-mailed Zeki support and got an answer several days later saying that external keyboards do not work with their units.

Meanwhile, I did some research. I discovered that there are more than one kind of mini USB connector. There is something called an OTG (On The Go) connector, designed for phones and tablets that are actually wired differently than the standard connectors. So I ordered one. I got it, connected the keyboard to the tablet with it and it works perfectly.

My MIL first bought one of these on sale at Kmart for my son. Since his birthday was a couple months away, I made her hold on to it until then. I should have checked out the tablet first. Once we finally opened it (now past the 30 day return policy of Kmart), it needed charged for 10 hours, which was fine. But 10 minutes after turning it on after being fully charge (battery was full), it started freezing up on us. Eventually horizontal lines appeared as well. So since I can't get a refund on that one, they are making me replace it at my shipping costs. Fine...if it actually works.

The reason I worry is because after my son knew he was getting a tablet, my daughter wanted one. So to prevent fighting over unfair tablet differences, I bought her another Zeki from Amazon. Well, after discovering his problems, I quickly opened hers to see if it had any problems. Within 30 SECONDS after turning it on after charging, it started to freeze up, too. So this one is going back to wherever it came from. I'm not waiting around to see if they will give us the "rare" working ones. Apparently I found the TWO bad apples in the bunch!

I have been waiting to purchase a tablet for a while now and finally one came out that I felt was a great deal for a quality tablet. The screen with the capacitive multi touch is awesome and works just like the ipad but for a lot less money. I am also impressed with the 8 gb of memory, expandable to 32 gb, where as other tablets I looked at had from zero (Leader international) to 4 gb for much more money. The apps are easy to download and amazon offers so many Android apps that it would take a life time to try them all. I reviewed this item before I bought it on a few hard core techie web sites and they put it through the rigors that a normal user would never do and it came out with excellent results from the guys that try purposely to overload it , make it crash and download it to its max and all without loosing speed when browsing. The browser by the way is as good as my laptop and fast. While comparing tablets I noticed that the Android operating systems were, in many of the very expensive models, the older versions ( with instructions on updating them when you purchase them...didnt want to do that) and this is as updated as it gets. I am glad I waited and checked out many tablets before deciding so I am now using it with no regret or buyers remorse. I just ordered the keyboard/case from Amazon to make it even easier to type documents and letters.

I have had this tablet since July this year (2012) and like almost everything about it.

The Good : Graphics are good, screen is sensitive and easy to clean, battery life is far better than advertized if WiFi is off, audio quality via headphones is better than some standalone CD players, charging can be done through the supplied charger or via the usb port, scrolling is smooth and intuitive most of the time, most apps install easily, the firmware allows both the hard drive and the removable memory card to be accessed with the usb and a laptop as if it were a thumb drive, graphics card is better than some laptops, HDMI out is easy plug and play, and gives clear non jerky images on the TV. WiFi is very powerful, so much so I can watch youtube on the fabled missing wifi of south campus UMass Lowell. The tablet comes pre-rooted out of the box, although some people from XDA Developers say they didn't do a perfect job of it. I was able to trick it and google into installing google play and some apps from it using instructions from their forum.

The Bad (mostly easy to work around or trivial):
First and foremost it is delicate even by the standards of consumer electronics. The main problem is the screen does not have a metal encasement in back and is therefore as vulnerable to pressure and blows from the back as from the front. The screen on mine was cracked by excessive pressure from the backside of the tablet, not from a fall. The working parts of the screen are made of glass not polycarbonate. The charger uses a narrower input pin than some competitors and there is some worry that it could break off inside and get stuck, this has not happened to my zeki 7 but it did happen to another tablet of mine that uses the exact same size and voltage charger pin.
