I've used Zelco's booklights for years, and discovered early on that their bulbs burn out quickly - no doubt a nice profit center for the company since replacement bulbs cost about a dime each when bought in bulk. The problem is that four 1.5 volt batteries (or the AC adapter) produce 6 volts, and, while called 6 volt bulbs, these things actually work optimally at 5 volts (which 4 rechargable NiCad batteries would produce, but that's another discussion). The solution is to hit Radio Shack or a similar vendor (maybe amazon has them?) and buy 7.5 volt replacement bulbs (they're about a buck each at full retail). You get very slightly less light, but a single bulb has now lasted me almost 3 years of nightly use, because the filament in the bulb is burning at a lower temperature. So only buy these 6 volt bulbs if you like replacing bulbs frequently and/or need the extra 7% of light they squeeze out of their overworked, overheated filaments, or are using NiCad rechargable batteries (which, although they're called 1.5 volt batteries, only produce 1.3 volts).

These bulbs are very expensive and very short lived. Unfortunately it is almost impossible to find a cheaper replacement with the same amp and watt rating. You are hooked into buying these bulbs for your itty bitty if you want the same brightness. These bulbs progressively darken as the tungsten is burned off the filament and deposited on the bulb surface, so the light begins a dimming process almost immediately. This whole system from Zelco needs reengineering. Beware!

We, my husband and I, have had our Itty Bitty Book Lights for about 12-15 years and living in Africa where we often visit 'the bush' - no electricity, we couldn't manage without them for night time reading. They are fabulous and we seldom have a problem with the light attracting insects. Love them to bits! Am sending for Replacement Bulbs as we can no longer get them here. Thanks Zelco

I've been using an Itty Bitty Book Light for more years that I care to remember (probably close to 20). I've had numerous lights that have been replaced for a variety of reasons, usually the insulation on the wiring where the cord attaches to the base wears away and the thing shorts out, but sometimes it gets <cough, cough> stepped on.

As you can imagine, I've been through a LOT of replacement bulbs over the years, too. The bulbs work fine. As other reviewers have said, as the bulb is used, the light does become dimmer and more yellow. I haven't found this to be too much of a problem. When they get too dim, I just replace them.

So why only three stars? Because Amazon's product page is confusing. These light bulbs come in a blister pack of two bulbs. (With me so far?) The "title" of the page is "Zelco Itty Bitty Book Light Replacement Bulbs, Set of 2," which implies that you're buying 2 light bulbs for $14.99. But, wait!! Just below that is the unit price of "($7.50/package)", which indicates that you would get 2 packages, for a total of 4 bulbs.

I have been round and round with Amazon Customer Service about this with my last two orders. $14.99 for two bulbs is absolutely overpriced. They can be ordered from several other online sources for even less than $7.50/pkg. Amazon has changed the Product Description to indicate that what they are selling is two bulbs in one package. When they get their act together and change the pricing at the top of the page, I'll come back and edit the review and give this product the 5 stars I think it deserves.

I've been using these book lights for years and years - at home, in the car, on a houseboat...I absolutely love them. However, as much as I love them, I also hate the bulbs!! They are so nice and bright and easy to read by when you first put one in the light. So perfect!

Then, within a week (I use mine for about 2 hours every night) the bulb starts turning darker and darker and the effective light is dimmer and dimmer until I have to replace the bulb before it even burns out!!!! That ticks me off. I have tried every single book light on the market that I could find - none of them compare to this one. It really irritates me to have to buy 6 pkgs of these at a time because they can't be found locally and they dim so fast.

I've written to Zelco and begged them to address the issue - har har, good luck with that! I'm just glad that I can at least buy the replacement bulbs on amazon.

Oh, I also tried some of the other suggestions in the reviews ie, buying from Radio Shack (different wattage, voltage, etc.) but it doesn't help me because those always seem really dim right away...so, today I am buying more bulbs! What a sucker, huh?

You need replacements, well, as far as the lamp that goes with these, well, my kids have had them for some time and use them all the time so the quality of the lightbulbs is great- I was sent a couple replacements with the light when they got them for gifts but to this day have not had to replace them.

I use my itty-bitty booklight almost every night so the extra bulbs are insurance that it will always work for me.

Buy them by the dozen because, on AC power, these bulbs have a very short effective lifespan.

The heat generated causes the glass to start darkening from the first use. In a matter of weeks you'll notice that you can't see the type very well anymore. This is because the bulb glass turns dark grey, so very little light can pass through it.
