Sophisticated Lyricism, August 26, 2007

I stumbled on this one by accident. What a delight.
Zemlinsky, who was a relative of and a teacher of Schoenberg, reveals himself to be an accomplished composer -- rich, sweeping, and Romantic. The orchestrations are dense and studded with jewels. I suspect that if this composer had been born 30 years earlier, he would now be cannonical.
