1.0 out of 5 stars Muzak, kitsch, tacky cover music.
If you want the genuine item: check out albums such as "Gold Finger," "Sleeping Lotus" and "Music for the Qin Zither" and the many albums from Japan.

I don't normally gravitate toward any type of music that could possibly be used for meditation (especially space music) because it lacks any real emotion in me and I become tediously bored with the flat rhythms that are beautiful, yes, but seem to go nowhere. I try to keep an open mind though which is needed in this genre (you must become free and let go of all earthly cares) and have found a few exceptions, such as Troika, Pia, and Medwyn Goodall. The serene harmonies on `Zen Breakfast' are absolutely gorgeous and I feel as if I'm floating in rapturous bliss every time I listen to this heavenly music. The sound of Karunesh may be simplistic but it's layered with such peaceful tranquility. The common stress of everyday life is kept asunder as the chaos becomes lost in the calming winds. I love unwinding to the breathtaking melodies heard here and feel so relaxed as I take in the mystical cadence (tempo) that's sometimes tinged with an underlying sadness. The melancholy flutes often convey that feeling as it's a very haunting instrument. The bluesy guitar chords played by Govi augment the sitar, chimes and gongs and the songs are never tarnished of their dreamy, trance-like quality.

"Zen Breakfast" is truly classic "New Age" music, with floating melodies, shimmering flutes, clear bells, gentle guitar and piano. Many of the tracks remind me a bit of early Kitaro, but this is definitely not an imitation of that artist or any other. While there are many Eastern influences, there are also many from the West, joining to make a soothing, mystical blend. The music is quiet and consistent enough in mood and tempo to make a very pleasant backdrop for other activities. It will also hold up well for meditation or meditative listening. Just don't try to wake up to it - I can tell you from personal experience that this will put you right back into dreamland! The album is extremely well done and is beautiful to listen to. I have seen comparisons to Ray Lynch's groundbreaking "Deep Breakfast", but even though Lynch incorporates Eastern touches into his music, the only thing I find that the two albums have in common is a word in the title. "Zen Breakfast" doesn't have anything as catchy as "Celestial Soda Pop" or "Rhythm in the Pews", and while it is an excellent album, Lynch brought us something brand new with his recording, and this CD continues the tradition without breaking any new ground - something I doubt Karunesh was intending to do anyway. This CD was apparently conceived over a breakfast meeting with Karunesh and Real Music President Terence Yallop, hence the title. The cover art is especially nice on this CD.

This is a wonderful, musical CD. It is a great mixture of acoustic instrumentation with very subtle overdubbings, including natural sounds. The music really pulls you into each piece differently, and provides a complete, and compelling soundscape for each selection. There are no "dud" cuts, and the peices can stand alone, or can be enjoyed as a continuous CD experience without inducing a seriously comatose state....unfortunately, a common difficulty for some music of this genre. The artist, Karunesh, creates music diverse enough to be included on deeply healing, meditation CDs as well as songs which contain a ral groove, allowing the music to appear on compilation CDs such a Claude Challe's "Buddah Bar". This CD is almost the "folk" version. The tunes are not overly lively, or driving, but there is a definite pulse. On the other hand, they are not so introspective that the listener feels like entering a meditative state. Listen to track number 4, "Remembering to Forget" to get a feel for the music....

5.0 out of 5 stars Lilting Meditative Music, November 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Zen Breakfast (Audio CD)
Zen Breakfast is just gorgeous! Its haunting, lilting melodies in instrumentation and voice are very tranquil and meditative. I first heard it during a session of Chinese Traditional Medical Massage and requested the name of the CD, so that I could use it at home for meditation and just pure relaxation. It takes one to other worlds. I cannot wait to try some of the other music of Karunesh.

This album to my taste is by far the best work of Karunesh (I have listened to 17 of his titles). I can listen to it almost indefinite amount of times and don't seem to get tired. I just wish "The Inner Temple" composition was a part of this album. :)

This CD is a very honest, melodic and deep attempt of Karunesh to approach our hearts. I feel that what he has produced comes deep from his soul. It is a CD that should be listened from a to Z and it can help us to achieve our primary scope in this life: get to know ourselves better. Go deeper, a lot deeper, of course, is sometimes painful. But, after all, I need more than living a surfacial, "happy", successful life and I wellcome the opportunities such as this CD, to free my feelings. Thank you, Karunesh.

I listened to the preview tracks before purchasing...and I liked all of them. When I received it, I put it at my office and played it while working on my clients. It's very relaxing. It's good to work with. The melodies on the CD are beautiful and tranquil...and put me in a good space. I have received lots of compliments on it from my clients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, August 22, 2011

This is a very good relaxation CD. When giving Reflexology treatments, my clients always say it allows them to forget about their own troubles. I also find it allows me to empty my mind of any negativities when playing th CD so I am able to focus on my client. I have had clients in their 80's and they all love this CD. It is more of a relaxation CD rather than one would use for mediation. I will certainly look into buying a few more CD's by Karunesh. A lovely CD for all massage therapies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zen Breakfast Meditation Album, June 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Zen Breakfast (Audio CD)
This is the best CD for meditation that I have found. I relax to it, sleep to it, and even wake up to it. No matter how I feel, the album aligns with my feelings, or sometimes changes them, e.g. when I am sad, I feel joyful. One thing that I love about the CD, besides that is calming and soothing, is that it allows my mind to wander free and dream. This music by Karunesh is both mysterious and unusual. I look forward to finding out what instruments are played, but so far I am enjoying his music so much I don't have time to think about anything. I have another CD by this talented artistn on my Walkman so I can carry him with me too.
