Japanese art historian Mimi Hall Yienpruksawan celebrates this book in the March 2001 edition of Art Bulletin as "marking a watershed in the genre," and as a study that "explore[s] the world of art in the Zen doctrinal and ritual context with such specificity and textual foundation as to eclipse most earlier work on the subject, if not disprove it altogether." Her high praise is well deserved. This book is a must have for those interested in the subject!
