This PLA is some of the best we've tested so far. We are using 185C and 0.2mm layer heights with wonderful results. PLA has a much lower melting temperature that ABS so that may explain the previous review's poor results using high temperatures (230C). Anyway, when you find good PLA you tend to stick with it. Indeed, this is the good stuff. Each roll come vacuum sealed with a silica desiccant packet inside. When you break the seal there is a very satisfying sound of air rushing to fill the vacuum. The plastic lays down really nicely. We've seen it bridge some gaps that we though for sure were impossible. To achieve similar results, I suggest cooling the part with a small fan attached to the carriage.

The natural PLA prints wonderfull! Natural does a good job of minimizing the notability of Z-axis lines (kind of as black does.)

However, I faced a serious problem that had me debating whether to give this a four or a three star review. The roll is simply wrapped in such a way that it frequently tangles. I can often save a print when I catch it, by unrolling much of the filament and rerolling it. But if I leave the print for several hours without attendance (or without unrolling and rerolling a lot of the roll, which further complicates things as it can tangle as I reroll) I run the risk of the print tangling on the roll. It's quite frustrating, and unfortunately a big problem with this roll.

Overall, I would say Zen Toolworks has been some of the best budget-filament I have used. I really like it! But there seems to be an issue with my particular roll here and it detracts from the usability.

UPDATE:::

I have dropped the rating from 3 stars to 1 star.
The reason for this is the cumulative effect of buying a roll of their Black PLA. For some reason the product has been rolled into a "set" for each color, so only one review per "set" is allowed. As it stands this means my review for the black PLA needs to be rolled into my previous review for the natural filament.

So I have given the black PLA 1 star because it has particulate matter that's inducing clogging. I have tried at the full temperature range from 180 to 240 and I had no less than five clogs yesterday. Luckily, I haven't had a lot of trouble clearing the clogs (nichrome wire into my 0.4mm nozzle), but the prevalence of them is a sure sign of contaminated filament. By comparison, I recently went through 3/4 a kg of natural PLA from toolworks, 1/2 a kg of afinia blue abs, 1/2 kg of green abs, and *not a single clog.* Meanwhile, I went through no more than 100g of this PLA with 5 clogs.

For most print jobs I had to turn down the heat on my replicator2 for this filament - the 230C used by makerbot filament was too hot. I've printed quite a bit on this filament with very few problems. This is a little glossy but has a nice opaque finish. This filament was a little 'droopy' and the spool diameter isn't quite big enough otherwise I would have rated it a 5.

I have a Replicator 2 and after reading the product description, along with noticing it seemed to flow a lot faster than the natural PLA that the Rep 2 shipped, I changed my build temperature to 200C.

First build out the gate was a large high quality model (shown here: www dot thingiverse dot com/thing:59857) and it came out fantastic. Very impressed with this filament.

Great price and quality. Will buy more from this distributor in the future.

I purchased this for use on our MakerBot Replicator 2, as it is significantly less expensive than through the MakerBot store. I've made many good quality prints with it, and haven't had any problems. I'll definitely purchase this again.

I don't normally write glowing reviews, but in this case it's justified. I struggled with ABS filaments for a long time, finally trying one horrendous PLA spool from a different manufacturer before finding this. This filament prints and looks fantastic. The width and consistency are great. I got better quality prints the first try at 185C (70C bed temp, hairspray on glass) then I did during months of tinkering with any other filament. Suddenly my printer (printrbot plus) is producing amazing stuff, and I couldn't recommend this more. I realize that manufacturing processes can produce inconsistencies, and I'll update this review in the future if subsequent spools are any different.

This silver PLA filament from Zen Toolworks has printed well for me. It adheres well to build plate but doesn't cement on so tight it rips the blue tape when you remove it.

ONLY downside I've seen is they use those cheap cardboard sided spools. The tend to bend/deform waaaay to easy when they're stacked in bins with the other spools.

Printing this on a Makerbot Replicator 2....

This Black filament has given me some issues. I have never had filament that acts quite like this stuff. Its almost too sticky, I have to slow down the extruder and heat it up to 215C to get it to run properly, and it never quite looks as good as any of the other filament I have used. I tried about 50 different settings to see if I could get it to work properly. Also occasionally it gets bubbles. I would say one or twice throughout a big print.
