I purchased a peeler similar to this one about 15 years ago, it finally bit the dust last month. I couldn't find a replacement in any of the retailers so I settled for the typical peeler every kitchen place sells. I paid more money for a piece of garbage that was dull and made peeling potatoes and carrots impossible. I finally found the Swiss Rex veggie peeler on line (which is the same one I originally had), purchased it for way less that the one I bought which was useless. I got it within one week and it works just as well as the one I originally had. Why people settle for the typical store bought ones, I don't know...

Bought two of these peelers about 20 years ago at a home show. Our church was just getting into free community feeds on Christmas Day, and I was doing the butternut squash - about 40# at the time. Business has picked up over the years - last year we did 250# of squash. Currently we purchased the squash peeled, but the quality varies all over the lot - from OK to rotten. Squash is very perishable once peeled. If you've gotta have a good squash, peel it yourself.
Anyway, back to the peelers. Put #1 in the kitchen drawer, put #2 on a nail in the floor joists in the basement over my workbench. Peeler #1 has been used to do Christmas Squash (hundreds of pounds), plus the normal potatos, carrots, etc. for 20 years! Peeler #2 is still hanging from the nail.
Recommendation? Buy two - see how long it takes for you to use your second one! Yeah, there's no ergonomic 'cushy' grip and how to hold it is kinda an individual thing - but it peels like a champ.

Absolutely junk and totally FAKE!

This is not the original Swiss made Rex that will last for 30 years, this is some fake cheap knockoff, it rusted very badly after a week (the blade) the rest is aluminum and not anodized or coated, so it just gets dull and fuzzy like raw aluminum.

After a week this looks like it was left outside for years - my mother has a 20 year old REAL one and it looks like the day she bought it!

Do not buy!

I have used my Zena peeler for over 12 years with great success, although for the last six or so have started to wash most fruits and vegetables with a pair of scrubbing gloves in order to get the vitamins in the peels themselves. But when I peel, this is my go to peeler.

Dan Lewis on his blog "Now I Know" recently had an interesting article about this peeler and a great salesman who never ever had one returned. Quite an endorsement! (You can find a link to the article and the video in the first comment -- a great teaching tool and some great selling patter.)

For the better part of two decades -- well into his 70s -- Joe Ades followed the same routine. He'd get up early, typically before dawn, and get dressed in his $1,000 suit with high-end shirts and ties. He'd leave his Manhattan apartment (and, toward the end of his career, that was a three-bedroom one on Park Avenue) and make his way to work. Like his millionaire neighbors, Ades probably pulled down well north of $100,000 a year. But unlike his neighbors, he wasn't off to a job on Wall Street or at any other typical six-figure income job. He was off to a street corner to sell $5 potato peelers.

Yep. Potato peelers. To be fair, they could peel carrots, too.

Born in Manchester, England in 1934, Ades was a street vendor at an early age, dropping out of school to earn money selling comic books. Over the years, he'd sell virtually anything that there was a market for, honing his sales pitches over time. He came to the United States in the late 1980s or early 1990s and by 1993 had settled in Manhattan, focusing his sales acumen on potato peelers he imported from Switzerland.

Purchased the Swiss Rex Vegetable Peeler.....This is the best vegetable peeler I have ever had. I purchased one many
years ago in Arizona....and could never find another one. It lasted for at least 15 years or so. So I decided to look on
Amazon to see if it was still around and could be purchased. I found it and ordered 2.... I a so happy to have them.
They were delivered promptly and were just perfect. Very happy with my purchase. Thank you.

I have had one of these peelers for more than 10 years now. My brother brought it back from Switzerland for me. They peel virtually everything. I regularly use it for carrots, apples, and potatoes. It also works well for tougher skinned vegetables like butternut squash. Most peelers can't handle a butternut squash, but the carbon steel blade of these works very well, and they are constructed to be sturdy enough to handle the job. I bought new ones so that I had a backup for my old one and I wanted one for my neighbor because she didn't have anything that would peel a butternut squash.
The only negative of this peeler is that you should only hand wash it and dry the blade off soon after washing. Leaving the blade wet will cause it to rust, which can be cleaned off with a scouring pad if necessary. With the proper care this peeler will last many years.
