It took 3 generations but Asus has finally fixed all the problems and perfected their Zenbook line.

-This thing is unbelievably well constructed, everything FEELS as solid as it should given its price.
-The touchpad works great
-The keyboard is backlit and the keys even register corner presses
-The screen, besides being 1440p, is also extremely bright, which somewhat makes up for the glossy screen required by the inclusion of a touch screen
-The haswell processor has apparently increased the battery life significantly over the previous generations.

In addition to all of the above, this thing is literally the most beautiful device I have ever seen and since everything visible is covered in Gorilla Glass 3, that isn't likely to change as its unlikely that a laptop will encounter sand, which is the only common thing that will scratch GG3.

If you have the money, there are no compromises made with this laptop(except for high end gaming due to lack of discrete video card) as long as you are willing to wipe it down with the included giant lens cloth every once in a while to keep it looking pristine.

Update: I have noticed recently that the wireless adapter sometimes needs to be reset after the computer sleeps in order to function properly. It has only happened twice so far and I figure this is a driver issue that will be addressed by an update.

Update 2: It looks like maybe a windows update fixed the wireless card issue? I haven't experienced it since the first week.

I was looking for a windows ultrabook to rival the MacBook Air and this is it.

On the positive side it is very light and thin, screen is high resolution, the keyboard is amazing, long battery life, fast processor and storage.
The only real negative is that the case is a fingerprint magnet.

I compared the asus to all leading options and found this to be the best of the lot.

Amazing Windows 8.1 machine. Asus design features are a nice balance of power vs. performance
This ultrabook is thin and lightweight but boasts heavyweight performance.
4th gen (Haswell) Intel Core i5 processor (dual core with hyperthreading) is power efficient and still quite fast.
8 GB DDR3 1600 memory provides plenty of space for running multiple applications.
256 GB Sandisk A110 PCIe SSDs (128GB x 2 RAID0) extremely fast. Windows boots in under 10 seconds!
Excellent ultra high resolution (2560x1440) touchscreen and responsive back-lit keyboard. Good touch-pad as well.
Integrated Intel 802.11AC WiFi controller works well.
(2) USB 3.0 ports for storage and peripherals (GbE adapter is included).
The beautiful Gorilla Glass enclosure is the perfect package for this hardware.

This is a great computer, and I was puzzled by all the negative reviews. Once I took the leap and bought one, I quickly learned where many of the problems were coming from: Windows 8. I had a screen with pulsating brightness; the wireless would drop out; the BIOS didn't recognize one of the SSDs; and in general the machine didn't inspire a lot of confidence. In short, I was having the experience of many of the unhappy reviewers here.

Then I did the free upgrade to Windows 8.1, and the difference was night and day. The problems I earlier experienced disappeared. I now have a computer running essentially flawlessly. This machine, when it runs this well, is definitely worth the cost.

Maybe ASUS has serious quality control issues, and that's what explains the negative experiences of other reviewers here. But I am left wondering how many of these reviewers were using Win 8 instead of 8.1. There is a huge difference between the two operating systems, especially if you are running an early version of Win 8.

I think I am unusual in that I like Windows 8.1 and in fact now even prefer it to Windows 7. If you are someone who would rather stick with Windows 7, I'm not sure this computer is the right choice. In fact why buy a touchscreen in that case? But this is a spectacular laptop if you are willing to embrace Win 8.1.

ONE RANDOM NOTE: The literature from ASUS says this machine weighs 2.6 lbs. That is one of the primary reasons I bought it. However the model reviewed here (UX301LA-DH51T) weighs 3.2 pounds. It is about 3 ounces heavier than a Yoga 2 Pro, and 4 ounces heavier than an Acer Aspire S7. If weight really matters to you, this could be a consideration.

The performance of this laptop is incredibly fast, and combined with the size makes it a pretty killer laptop. However, after 7 months or so of use I've started to notice severe issues with the display. There are several noticeable extra bright spots on the screen. It started with one bright spot, and has now developed to 5. Within the last few weeks a very large red line has appeared from top to bottom. Based on the other reviews here, it seems I'm not the only one that has had serious display issues.

I've recently requested an RMA, and they refuse to do an advance replacement on it, insisting that it must be physically inspected to ensure no damage. Not only do I have to accept a factory refurbished replacement within one year of owning my new laptop, but, now I have to somehow manage to get work done without a computer for a few weeks.

For the price paid,$1,800 at the time, this is not the quality nor service I'd expect. I had an ASUS EEE PC prior to the Zenbook that lasted for 5 years, no issues what so ever, and it only cost $350. This would easily be a 5 star review, if it wasn't for the poor service and screen quality. Moral of the story, don't spend more than a few hundred dollars on any ASUS product otherwise you may regret it.
