I placed this in the comments, then decided to share it here. My mother bought herself one, then bought me one, then I bought one for my in-laws. This is the best bird feeder I've ever seen. I placed mine 4 feet away from anything the squirrels could leap down to it from (they can't climb up it or tip it over), and it really works. It's covered with so many fat doves that my husband calls it the dove feeder, and we have to fill it every week. The squirrels wait under it for the crumbs the birds leave when flying away-- that's all they get. BTW: I did not end up getting it from a marketplace seller, as the promised delivery date instead brought only unanswered emails. They did not charge me for it, but I had to scramble to find a last minute gift to replace one that had supposedly been in stock and available for holiday delivery, and that was not a last minute order. Still, this feeder is widely available, even at Sears, and worth every cent you will pay for it. Get a big big bag of birdseed!

This feeder seems to have some good design ideas incorporated. It is free-standing and has a squirrel baffle that keeps the squirrels from climbing up from the ground. We have had a lot of trouble with squirrels. They are as clever as they are agile, and they have gotten into every feeder we have tried. They ate through the plastic parts of the best one, the cage type with a spring that closes the feeding holes with the weight of the squirrel - anyway, that is not the product of concern right now.

This feeder seems unique because of it's "easy" filling and the squirrel baffle. But, when you open the instruction book, it tells you that you must place this feeder 7 to 10 feet away from overhanging trees or other perches that squirrels have access to.

So, this is a warning to anyone who plans to place their feeder among trees or anywhere where they have had a problem with squirrels attacking their feeder from above.

It might be great in an open area!

I purchased this bird feeder from Amazon almost 2 years ago and am pleased with it. The first plus and the reason I purchased it was to keep the large squirrel population surrounding my house at bay. I have it sitting on my outdoor patio in the hot florida sun and heavy rains, which it has weathered beautifully, and yes I keep it far enough away from trees, shrubs, etc. so the squirrels can not jump onto it from above. My home is surrounded by trees filled with squirrels. With the squirrel guard, they can't get to it from the bottom. Problem solved! They do, however, gather at the bottom to get the leftovers scattered by the doves. My biggest disappointment is that it doesn't keep doves at bay and seems to attract them. Four can sit in the food tray at one time. My other feeders didn't have enough space for the doves to perch. My dove population has increased tremendously and eat a lot! They tend to crowd out the cardinals and blue jays. I wish the manufacturere could design the rim a bit differently so they can't sit in the tray. I also wish they could make the top cap wider to protect the bird seed in the tray but with the way the rain blows, they couldn't make the top cap wide enough to be of any practical help. On the plus side, it was very easy to assemble and yes, it takes a little bit of time to fill the base with sand but not very long. It is really easy to fill with bird seed, and is extremely well made. I am very pleased with the quality. I highly recommend it and am looking to buy another one.
