5.0 out of 5 stars Good all-around detector
I bought this detector because I wanted to be able to turn on my front porch light when someone drove up in my large yard. I mounted it some distance away from the light fixture. The 3 timer modes, sensitivity adjustment, and photo cell features all combine to make this an exceptional tool in controlling outside lights. It is far better than the regular motion-detectors...

Two problems with this unit.
1. Light from your bulbs sometimes shut this thing off, causing lights to turn off.
2. Will not control a relay so that you can use high powered lights. Won't be a problem for homeowners though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Replacement Sensor, November 29, 2010

This review is from: Heath/Zenith SL-5407-BZ-A Replacement Motion Sensor, Bronze (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this unit to replace a new Heath/Zenith model SH-5316 sensor, which was very bothersome, in that it would trigger the security light when it was windy, rainy, or leaves were rustling. Even with the sensitivity turned all the way down, it would still activate too easily.

So, I purchased this Desa SL-5407 and it works like a champ. Only activates the light when it's supposed to and has adequate range and angle coverage to do the job. In fact, I'm thinking about buying a second one for back-up in case these aren't offered in the future. The price is right, imho.

This was a replacement for a similar sensor that quit working after 15+ years. It was easy to install and calibrate and has worked quite well. Good product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Very Well, September 17, 2010

I give 5 stars, it's worked flawlessly for me - I didn't even need to adjust it. I purchased it to control two garage lights that also light an outside staircase. I was able to put this control in a good location to make that happen.

This sensor was installed as a replacement for a motion sensor front porch light. Very easy to wire and adjust, works great and has real good cover as far as distance and a good wide angle sweep pattern to activate the light. No problems with this unit and would purchase another in the future. If you need a replacement sensor for your outdoor light, this unit will do the job well.

3.0 out of 5 stars DESA is out of business, August 3, 2010

DESA's web site says the company went bankrupt in 2009 and is out of business. I went to the site trying to learn why my new unit failed to turn the light on.

My need is different from most. My spotlight is 12-volts and I put the sensor between the 120v supply and the step-down transformer. The sensor "works" in that you can hear a click when you should, but the light doesn't go on.

I removed the sensor from the circuit and hooked up the light as it had been, and it works again, so the sensor is the problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars sensitivity not very linear, February 22, 2011

This review is from: Heath/Zenith SL-5407-BZ-A Replacement Motion Sensor, Bronze (Tools & Home Improvement)
It works, but the sensitivity seems to go from zero to 100% at exactly 3/4 of the turn of the sensitivity dial. Also, I cannot seem to get it to properly come on when it should AND go off afterwards. The problem is that the heat from the bulbs sometimes cause the thing to stay on - ALL NIGHT. If I push the detector down at all, then it doesn't properly detect anything. Lame.

5.0 out of 5 stars The correct replacement, January 20, 2012

This model is the correct one to replace sensors that are bad and have been added to existing fixtures. Many people like to add sensors WITHOUT replacing the entire fixture. This model needs to remain current by Heath/Zenith.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Replacement Unit, December 18, 2011

My old sensor unit went dead (the front plastic lens decomposed)on me after 10 years so I purchased this unit because of the good reviews. As it turns out, my old unit was the same model as this one.
After installation, the unit would not turn off during the first night. Next day I used a small mirror to reflect the sun light directly at the bottom light sensor for a second and that did the trick. It's been working flawlessly ever since.
The only complain I have is that the 1-minute on position left the light on for 5 minutes not 1 minute. That's OK with me but it does reduces my options. Haven't checked what the 5-minute position will leave the light on for yet.
