5.0 out of 5 stars Nice addition to an existing Zentangle library September 17, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is exactly what the title says - "Inspiration and Prompts for Meditative Drawing". You will only find instructions for 12 tangles in the book. I have other Zentangle books that are just filled with patterns and this book is not like that. What I like about the book is that it is filled with writing about Zentangle and that is something I did not have. I know there is lots of information online and I do lots of blog reading, etc. but it's still nice to settle in with a book.

The writings are about how the author got started tangling along with in depth information on all kinds of different pens, pencils and paints I've heard about but didn't really know too many details on. After each pen, pencil or paint she talks about, there are a couple examples of tangles done with that one. I bought the Kindle edition and on my tablet it's really nice to zoom in and see all the detail of each type. There is a small section on shading and a large section on color. She also writes a lot about combining tangles with photography and again shows examples, a really informative chapter on tangles in journaling and a whole section on combining your tangles with different backgrounds in Photoshop. There are lots of examples of her work and then a little paragraph on what inspired that particular drawing. There are other contributers to the book besides the author and there is a little writeup on each person. The book ends with several links to blogs and places to buy supplies.

Again, I would say if you are looking for instructions on how to do lots of different tangles, this book is probably not for you. But, if you want a really pretty book to inspire you, along with some very nice writing that definitely motivated me to try new things and may do the same for you, I'd say give this book a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great descriptions of zentangle method and tools July 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is one of my favorite zentangle books. So many focus on how to create a few patterns, most of which can be found on the web. This books does a nice job of explaining the method, surveying the various pens, and a complete section on adding color. The examples are simple but beautiful. It would be a great first book on zentangle.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Zen...! June 22, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am new to zentangling, and I pretty much thought of it as doodling on steroids until I dove into this book. It is part explanation, part journal, and all creative. I highly recommend it to anyone, whether you are just starting, or are a CZT master, you will learn something new from Karen's book. Enjoy.

1.0 out of 5 stars A| Bit Disappointed September 30, 2012
By LML
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought this book would provide instruction on how to do different Zentangle patterns but it was just descriptions on how the author draws. It was nothing that I thought it would be. But if you are looking for inspiration, I think this book would be OK to use.

1.0 out of 5 stars Un-inspiring January 27, 2013
By Jude
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Techniques not explained, resulting images not particularly attractive, inspiring or useful. Turned off by the need for kits, talk of "certified Zentangle teachers", copyrighted names/methods and meditation. Really, using any of these terms when teaching what is basically fancy doodling is too much for me, and I've been involved in art, design and creativity all my life. The book felt more like marketing. I wanted to like it but there wasn't anything useful there. I have found another book "inspired" by Zentangle to be incredibly more useful and inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! I love it! July 6, 2012
Format:Paperback
I read this book cover to cover as soon as it arrived! I have every book written on Zentangle and I love this one. Kass Hall clearly explains the Zentangle philosophy, the basic and advanced tools for creating your own Zentangle art. Hall's book has sparked new ideas for my own work. Great book for beginner and advanced tanglers. I am a Certified Zentangle Teacher and I did contribute some artwork to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Untangled August 4, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Zentangle Untangled is truly a delight, especially if you love to tangle. The illustrations are beautiful and the instructions are precise and clear. One can hardly wait to turn the page to see what is next. It is a book you are eager to pick up and use time and time again not just another book for your shelf. Everytime you read it you are inspired to create something and every time you leaf through the book you find a new discovery. Thank you for the opportunity to review this product. Every tangler needs this reference.

I got this book with a lot of positive anticipation but ended up returning it. While the techniques described in the book are interesting, I felt uncomfortable with all the emphasis put on how the teaching technique was copyrighted and there were certified teachers for the process and certain patterns were copyrighted, etc. As someone who has worked in fiber arts (knitting, crocheting, embroidery, needlepoint, quilting, and sewing) all my life and photography for the past 30 years, and someone who has doodled my entire life, I felt extremely uncomfortable learning about a technique that appeared to have so many restrictions placed on it. While I see the need for artists to protect their work via a copyright, and believe that copyright is an important issue in the creation of art, for most of us who are hobbyists and do art because we find it fulfilling, some of these issues create unnecessary barriers. I felt it was better just return the book and explore meditative drawing in another way. I have found that for me, the creation of art in all the forms I have experimented with eventually becomes a meditation for me (and I would suggest for many others), and that is a large part of why we do it. Otherwise, this looked like a great book for producing interesting patterns in black and white or with color.
