Editorial Reviews

Review

"Sutherland begins this wise little book by asking readers to make a list of life commitments. Then he offers suggestions on creating a 'gentle budget' which reflects those commitments and life values; he goes on to outline a do-it-yourself plan for developing an investment portfolio, with examples of various low-cost strategies. There is also a list of companies, with information on fees, costs, hours, and minimum balances as well as advice on what to look for in a money manager. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, he reminds the reader that companies which creatively engage skill and produce something useful serve -- and sustain -- healthy communities. For anyone wishing to bring peace, harmony, and spiritual responsibility into money matters, here is a guide that is both smart and full of heart." -- NAPRA ReView, Nov/Dec, 1998

"This is a beautiful book, in concept and execution. Following the trend set by Prudential Bache broker Suze Orman in her best-selling Nine Steps to Financial Success, NAPFA Member Paul H. Sutherland has put together a book that uses a spiritual context for understanding personal financial planning investment. Unlike Orman, Sutherland educates the reader about financial planning. He serves up a good financial feast, laced with "fee-only" knowledge. Particularly satisfying is his concept of investment management for do-it-yourself portfolios. But he does a great job on insurance and gives brief sections on retirement and estate planning as well. He provides personal philosophical musings on "Romantic Reality" and "My Very Being" to set the stage. Tao Te Ching quotes and brush watercolors of Mt. Fuji add scenery. Our profession is constantly searching for a larger context for life planning than dollars and good sense. We want to help people live extraordinary lives. So we try to help our clients with perspectives about wealth that allow growth and freedom, not just financial balance. Zenvesting doesn't help its readers define Buddhist principles, but it shows them how to view their wealth with a reflective attitude of peace and acceptance. For this and many other reasons it will satisfy most readers, and it will keep them safe from the commission wolves as well. I hope it is widely reviewed and sells well." -- National Association of Personal Financial Advisers, NAPFA Advisor, December, 1998 --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
