Book Description

17 years ago, in the island village of Dentro, lived a large and powerful demon. With just a howl, mountains were obliterated. With the help of an outsider, the chief of Dentro destroyed the demon and sealed it's dark power within three powerful ancient weapons: A spear, shield, and a sword. After leaving the unwelcoming village, the man who helped destroy the demon took the sword in an effort to keep the village and it?s people safe. Months later, a villager bore the son of the outsider, breaking one of the sacred village laws in doing so. Born into a village filled with hateful people, Zephyr grew up without knowing why he was hated. With no friends, and eventually no family with the passing of his mother, Zephyr was forced to survive by himself as an outcast. Zephyr's only wish, being to make his mother proud and force the village to recognize him while surviving in a world filled with demons, paranormal abilities, love, hate, and undiscovered lands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why is this book not a movie yet? June 7, 2014
Format:Paperback
"Zephyr: The West Wind" is a must read book if you are a fantasy fan, an anime fan, a fighter, a spiritual person, a believer in faith, a believer in goodness, a believer in light, a noble soul, or even if you seek inspiration, guidance, confirmation, determination...

I identified myself through each page of the book. The characters are so well described, the action scenes become visibly present through each paragraph, the fantasy and supernatural energy is explained in such details that makes one think if we really truly are packed with such but we just haven't discovered yet.

In addition to fantasy and entertainment factor each scene expresses, I found the book inspiring, guiding, reinforcing some choices, and questioning other ones. The difference choices the two main characters have taken reminds me of life, of truth, of who we are..of what we stand for ... And at the end you understand...You make choices. You fight for them. Sometimes you succeed... Sometimes you don't ..and during all this time you miss an important factor... Before you chose.. You have been chosen...

5.0 out of 5 stars My 12-year old nephew loved this book! August 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was looking for an appropriate children's book for my nephew, who is 12 years old. I was looking for a book by a younger writer, who I felt could relate better to how kids think or want. So I felt that R.J. Tolson, who is a very young man, could understand his younger readers better.

And, I wasn't wrong. My nephew loved “Zephyr - The West Wind” and identified himself with the 17-year old hero of the book, Zephyr. Zephyr is a classical underdog, an outcast hated by all for no fault of his own, and yet, a wonderful young man – kind, generous, courteous, brave and courageous. He is an adventure seeker and doesn't flinch when in danger. Zephyr is a very positive role model for young boys and girls.

Another impressive thing about the book was that I couldn't find a single grammatical error in it. Which is wonderful, because I feel most modern day writers ignore grammar. It is so important that kids read books written in perfect English as that helps them at school.

5 stars for a great effort by a young and talented writer!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Epic Tale of Discovery and Acceptance March 12, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
Fantasy is like spaghetti sauce, everyone loves it, but it isn’t that often that the ingredients used are to everyone’s liking, no matter the age! Geared toward young teens and YA readers, Zephyr: The West Wind by R.J. Tolson is an invitation to fall into the story and be one of the characters, living and breathing the same air as Zephyr, no matter your age. In a cold and harsh world filled with demons, supernatural gifts, barbaric tests of adulthood, small minds and hearts, one boy struggles to stand tall and do the right thing, in spite of his outcast standing in his village.

Zephyr has only known contempt by his village, all for an accident of birth that he had no control over. Few were kind, most were cruel, yet he chose to act the way he wanted to be treated. Would it be worth it? Survival after the death of his mother was harsh, but he vowed to her to be a good person and to make her proud.

Leaving his village, Zephyr’s journey will take him into a world that recognizes him as the man he is, as he meets friends, allies, mentors and even evil. Will he continue to use his powers against evil? Will he finally earn the respect of his people or will his need to do the right thing and protect the defenseless trump his need for acceptance? In his travels to learn to accept himself and to discover who he really is, he becomes aware of his role in the world, but no man is an island and learning to trust the right people may be a difficult choice when things look bleak. More importantly, he must learn to trust and believe in himself.

R.J. Tolson has mastered storytelling, building a fantasy world that feels both ancient and contemporary by combining age old issues with the magic of make-believe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Surprise April 2, 2015
By Holly
Format:Hardcover
I received a complimentary copy of RJ Tolson's Zephyr The West Wind book and I'm thrilled I did! Zephyr The West Wind serves up a wonderfully rounded and much needed twist to 21st century sci-fi fantasy stories. So many novels lead readers on magical, mystical adventures to protect the world from evil but Zephyr The West Wind does so by blending real human inner conflict, emotion and coming of age experiences with fantasy and science fiction. These dynamics drew me into Zephyr The West Wind and open Zephyr The West Wind up to a broader audience than the sci-fi fantasy community and sci-fi fans. The vivid depictions of fantastical creatures, adventures, surprising twists and turns, and compelling characters like Zephyr's "frenemy", Leon, make for an entertaining read. This is the first book in RJ Tolson's Chaos Chronicle Series and I would recommend it. It's an excellent choice for parents who may want to read a book simultaneously with their teens and pre-teens as fuel for fun and engaging family discussions or might like to read an attention getting story to their elementary age children. Bottom line no matter your age it's an entertaining journey! I look forward to RJ Tolson's next book in the series.
