Turn out the lights and crank up the volume!,

This review is from: Zephyr Live (Audio CD)
I was fortunate to be in Denver in the late 60' and early 70's and heard Zephyr many times. This album captures some of the excitement of their live performances that their studio albums couldn't quite catch. Zephyr was a tight and powerful band, by no means merely a front for the guitar virtuosity of Tommy Bolin, gifted though he was. Candy Givens' blueswailing and harmonica still knock me out, and there is none of the shrillness that marred some of her vocals on their first album. Their cover of "Goin' Home" shows them at their best. Despite some flaws in the quality of the recording and Bolin's occasionally over-the-top investigations of electronic distortion, this is a must album for Zephyr and Bolin fans, and for those who want a taste of early 70's hard rock, Colorado style.

Zephyr Live! w Candy Givens and Tommy Bolin,

This was one of the great blues rock groups that never got the attention and recognition they deserve. Candy Givens vocalist extraordinaire! And she blows a mean harp. Tommy Bolin is legendary. Both died all too young. Drums, keyboards, bass, all very polished performances.
I saw them live on numerous occasions including when they opened for Led Zeppelin's first US performance and when they were asked to perform twice at the Denver Pop Festival, which was Jimi Hendrix's last US performance. If you love classic rock, this is a treasure you want to get to know.

Bolin's Best Live Work?,
By
This review is from: Zephyr Live (Audio CD)
I have to say that I think that this is Tommy Bolin's best live performance, or at least right up there! He is loose, bluesy, funky, fast, and on fire. Play "The Creator Has A Master Plan" once and be convinced. He never gave himself this much space to solo with the James Gang or with his own solo band in 1976, and he is in a more varied context than he was on "Ebbets Field 1974," which is one of his other best live works. I have to disagree with David Givens and say that this blows "Sunset Ride" away!!

Excellent live recording with only one complaint in the mixing-Candy's vocal gets a little lost in most parts. It's hard to come close to Alvin Lee's guitar leads on 'Comin' Home' (pre-Woodstock) but this is a must have for Bolin fans! And for the reviewer looking for a copy of "Sunset Ride" in LP form I have a few copies in excellent to mint condition.

PSYCHEDELIC-BLUES ROCK,

Out of all my Tommy Boin CDs, this is the most unusal for me. Not being a big fan of Bolin with Zephyr to begin with, this didn't win me over to say the least. It does deserve 4 stars though, because there are about 2 or 3 incredible if not to say, how does Tommy do it guitar solos. Most notably on Hard Chargin' Woman, which is his best I ever heard. Other the music is just unrehearsed, unpolished, and a bit unfocused. But I didn't expect this to be a tight, live set because the band had been broken uo for well over a year before getting back to together for this show. So it's just one big jam fest. A negative is Candy Givens, I never liked her singing so that's a real bummer on this but the music more than makes up for it. For Bolin fans, again, this is a must, because Tommy's solos on here are some of the best ever! LONG LIVE TOMMY BOLIN!

Best Zephyr since their appearances on American Bandstand and in Boulder nightclubs. Also desperately seeking Sunset Ride, easily their best work, one of the greatest albums ever. Why o why can this classic not be found or re-issued? Any help, Amazon?
