5.0 out of 5 stars Zero Halliburton Attaché: a once-in-a-lifetime classic, March 3, 2009
Briefcases are often more a matter of style than practical function, and all too often these styles do change. But when it comes to the American-made aluminum cases from Zero Halliburton, they transcends style in favor of pure function... which makes them uniquely stylish in themselves. I've had my Zero Halliburton 5" Elite Aluminum Attaché Case for almost thirty years now, and have found it to be an outstanding product, every bit as good today as it was the day that I took it out of its carton.

It's constructed of a pair of heat-tempered aluminum shells joined together by a continuous piano hinge. There are continuous neoprene gaskets which protect the contents from moisture and dust, and a pair of heavy-duty draw bolt style latches hold it closed. The handle is truly ergonomic, and the resettable triple-digit combination lock keeps things secure. The interior of my case has accordion-style file pockets in the upper lid section, and the bottom is lined in a dark brown cloth. The newer versions of this model have changed in that they have additional pockets and more leather.

My original decision to buy this attaché case was based on the prior purchase of a Zero Halliburton 103C Camera Case, which had been chosen to protect my camera gear when in transit. This attaché was the size match to that camera case, which made it handy for traveling, stowing one or the other under an airline seat during frequent travel in those days.

The main thing that influenced me to go for these cases was a series of advertisements which appeared in photo magazines during the '70s or '80s, where a vehicle weighing a couple of tons had driven over one of the camera cases and the contents were still undamaged. It was to me the best damage insurance that I could get for my cameras, and the briefcase soon followed.

Have had two product malfunctions over the years: one of the case latches lost its internal spring, and one of the internal supports that holds the case open failed. Both of these were replaced by Zero Halliburton at no charge with a simple phone call... and this was after the case had been in use for about 20 years. This is a company that stands behind their products 100%.

Pros:

- Durable, made of top-quality materials
- Excellent protection, weather resistant
- Timeless styling, good looking cases
- Light weight, just under three pounds
- American-made, lifetime warranty
- Long-term value

Cons:

- Initial cost very high

It's surprising to me to see these Zero Halliburton briefcases show up in various television series and in films such as "Quantum of Solace" (2008), where James Bond picks up a case at the Hotel Dessalines. Have spotted them in "Oceans 11" (2001), "Men In Black" (1997), "The Rock" (1996) and other films, yet to me this case symbolizes the best of a long-lasting American-made product. It has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in the 1930s, and that says a lot in a world of constantly changing styles.

These days I use a Lowepro Messenger Factor M Computer Bag for most general functions when a briefcase would be used, but the Zero Halliburton attaché case is still used for more formal business meetings. It's a classic that transcends fads; it speaks with authority, and lets people know that you mean business.
