[NON-U.S. FORMAT (PAL) Region 2 U.K. Import - This will not play on U.S. and Canada DVD players or those from most other countries outside of Europe. You would need a "multi-region" or "region-free" PAL compatible DVD player or computer.] SYNOPSIS: Turner Prize-winning artist and filmmaker Douglas Gordon teams up with French artist Philippe Parreno to create a work glorious in its simplicity. The film was made by training 17 cameras, under the supervision of acclaimed cinematographer Darius Khondji, solely on footballer Zinedine Zidane over the course of a single match between Real Madrid and Villareal. Zidane himself recounts, in voice-over, what he can and cannot remember from his matches. Magnificently edited and accompanied by a majestic score from Scottish rock heroes Mogwai, this is not only the greatest football movie ever made, but also one of the finest studies of man in the workplace, an ode to the loneliness of the athlete and the poise and resilience of the human body!

5.0 out of 5 stars Zizou January 25, 2008
This is one of the best docs about football (soccer) ever made and one of the best films detailing a man at his workplace. The filmmakers pick one of the best footballers of his generation in his last season of his career with Real Madrid. Beckham and Ronaldo makes a few cameos but make no doubt about it Zinedine Zidane is the star.
I should warn viewers that this is not a biography of Zizou's life and career but an artist's documentary that follows Zidane around the pitch (with 18 cameras) in a La Liga game at the Bernabeau against Villareal. It is an amazing portrait of a athlete at work as any film ever created.
And the ending is incredible (and no I will not give it away)
Zidane's career, since this film was made, has been clouded by his actions in the 2006 World Cup final, but make no doubt about it he was one of the greats who ever put on a pair of cleats and kicked the ball around, and this film proves it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Problem with extras on Blue Ray DVD October 23, 2010
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I was able to watch the main feature (worth every cent by the way). However, the extras will not play which is very frustrating as there is an interview with Zidane that I particularly wanted to see. Anyone else have this problem?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Re-make July 20, 2010
This is a very well conceived re-make of an earlier film made about George Best during a Manchester United v Coventry match called "Fußball wie noch nie" (Football as Never Before) by Hellmuth Costard. In the original film only 6 or 8 cameras follow just Georgie around exclusively but still gives the viewer the ambience and the sense of the environment around the player and the match. This modern re-encarnation takes the match a little further and shows how the world can operate in conjunction with the event as well as seperately from it. Zidane as a player not only has an effect on the 90,000+ in the Santiago Bernabeu but also on fans across the world. His every word and his every move exemplifies the influence of the sport on the audience. Beyond that it's a very true and honest portrayal of the game itself, the beauty, the intricicies, the ugliness, and ultimately it's objectivity. The game exists regardless of the actors and the audience, and this movie shows exactly that premis.

5.0 out of 5 stars ZIdane: A 21st century portrait September 13, 2010
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
This is a great movie with a wonderful soundtrack. Spike Lee tried to do a similar movie with Kobe after seeing this movie. If you like the beautiful game it is worth seeing. It explains why Zidane ruined the World Cup as well. It is a different way to watch a match and worth a view.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Microcosm of the Greatest Footballer Since Pele April 29, 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Zidane's unique, incomparable style was captured by this documentarian during a Spanish League match while he played for Real Madrid. Basically, throughout the match, the cameras (all of them) never stop focusing on the midfield maestro as the team's attack constantly flows through this graceful player. Zidane will be an enduring example of a true rarity in the sports world: a player whose presence makes every player around him better than what they would normally be. Zidane didn't dominate every match by taking every shot for his team. Zidane wasn't constantly shouting commands at teammates. He led through example and controlled the pace of the game and more often than not, created shot opportunities for teammates. However, he was a deadly scorer in his own right. This documentary is a terrific microcosm of the man, the player - Zidane.

4.0 out of 5 stars Football = Art? May 16, 2010

Missed a chance to see this at the National Gallery in Ottawa, so bought it instead. It will be a present for a huge Zidane fan, and I know he'll be impressed. Very impressive what I've seen so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies I have ever Seen May 9, 2014
I am a huge fan of both Zidane and Mogwai so I knew this movie was made for me. I was totally surprised however by the arc of the action and the way the film captures the rawest human emotions. I could go on and on, but I don't want to ruin the climax. If it sounds at all appealing to you, get this movie, it is an incredibly rich viewing experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars The video is okay
The video didn't meet my expectations. It didn't give enough details about the player or the team. Not worth the $12 price.
