5.0 out of 5 stars These Frenchies know how to rock!, May 28, 1999
This review is from: Zig-Zague (Audio CD)
At first listen I was a bit skeptical of the zany group, but Les Negresses Vertes have slowly but surely rocked their way to the front of my CD collection -- whether I want to dance or clean my apartment, the fun rhythms and unique blend of voices and instruments hit the spot every time. Of course being a bit well-versed in the French language adds an extra layer to the spectrum, but even non-Francophones will have a blast with these guys. My favorite album is Zigue-Zague, and Mlah comes in at a close second. Après La Pluie (track 3 on Zigue-Zague) gets me parading and singing around my apartment every time. Les Negresses Vertes' sound really WORKS because they include just enough "French" sound (accordions, etc.) to assuage that need for the romantic French sound and throw in the perfect dash of brash lyrics and strong rhythms to cater to the crazy banshees in us all. Vive le rock de France!

1.0 out of 5 stars Helno OD'd, and this album SuCKED!!!, December 23, 2006
This review is from: Zig-Zague (Audio CD)
On the night of the 21st of January 1993, singer and face of the band Helno (Noël Rota) decided fame was too boring for his taste so like any 90's trendy and cool guy decided to follow the footsteps of another loser kurt cobain, and put an end to his misery by overdosing on heroin. Such losers are not to be mourned or honored. Had he died of cancer, or an airplane crash, he would have been. Successful rock band members killing themselves has become so cliche nowadays it's almost a joke! Back to the album.... I bought this baby when it came out without bothering to listen to it before, foolishly TRUSTING THE BAND to actually PUT OUT A DECENT ALBUM... but it was not to be. There isn't a SINGLE SONG from this PIECE OF DISPOSABLE DUNG WORTH LISTENING TO ALL THE WAY THROUGH!!! The CD starts off with street sounds, an accordion sounds in the distance playing that old Italian Hit "Quando, Quando", only to be interrupted by the loud honking of a passing car... After those first 12 seconds, the album goes downhill. The singer in this and the rest of the group's releases until it finally got through to their thick heads that without the junkie they sound like any old wedding band, is guitarist Stefane Mellino, Though his efforts are brave and true, the quality of the songwriting has suffered as well as the delivery... Imagine replacing Mick Jones from The Clash with Pat Boone... and you'll have an idea of the tragedy that's happened here in this album. Had the remaining band members reformed under another name, I would have been more forgiving, but since the CD cost me $25- as an import, and since I've been deceived and cheated, I will denounce this album until the day I die... or get my money back.
