Move over Grinch..here comes Rover,
By
This review is from: Rover Saves Christmas (Hardcover)
Roddy Doyle has indeed done it again. This book ( a sequel to The Giggler Treatment) has all of the traits that made the original a must read book, wit, intelligence and a great sense of fun.Rover is not your basic 'dog next door' and neither is the book. As you might expect, Rudolph has decided not to guide Santa's sleigh on Xmas Eve and it is up to Rover to make sure that all the good kids in the world get their toys. If anyone has read "The Giggler Treatment" to know what to expect. A fun romp where the reader (from 8 to 80) never knows quite what is going to happen next, but that the gifts will arrive on time. Unlike some authors Roddy Doyle does not insult his reader, while giving them an exciting and playful story. Read the Giggler Treatment to your class first if you are a teacher like I am , and then expect your class to want this book!

I love Rover,

THis book is FUNNY. I spotted it in the children's section in our bookstore and decided that it is somethign worth getting for my son (a couple of years will pass before he is old enough for ths, but as an ambitious mother I have already started building a library--I kow it is silly, but it is amazing how many really good children's books are rarely reprinted)I read it and was laughing out loud. It is a simple story--Rudolph goes on strike and Santa needs to use Rover, the dog. The short chapters are hilarious, and the illustrations are beautiful. Some situations are absurd, and this absurdity is reinforced by the way the novel is structured (with recurring chapters and ads). Doyle has a great, multi-layered sense of humor, that borh children and adults will enjoy. He reminded me a lot of Terry Pratchett.

Rover Saves Christmas,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Rover Saves Christmas (Hardcover)
Rover Saves Christmas is about a dog named Rover who lives in Dublin with his friends. One day an elf showed up looking for Rover and told him that Santa needed him. So him , his friends, and the elf were off. when they got there they left emediatly. The rest of the night was incredable and they had a blast.
I think this is a great book for grades kindergarden through third.

A Kid's Review

Do you like comedy, or laughing so hard you cry? If yes, read Rover Saves Christmas by: Roddy Doyle. If no, go find some other book.
What happen when Rudolph gets sick on Chtistmas Eve? Rover saves the day, with a little help from his friends. Can a dog make it all around the world in one night? I think Roddy Doyle wrote this book because he nedded a good laugh. This is the best book ever. It's so funny ( like S.N.L. for kids funny .) Even my mom likes it. So what are you waiting for? Go buy the book and read it! P.S. : Read every page even 159. P.S.S : Who are you? Who are you? Whhhooo aaarrreee yyyoooouu?! P.S.S.S. : Bum - Bum! Bum - Bum!! Buuummm - Buummm!!! You have to read the book to understand this.

More adventures from Roddy's Rover,
By
This review is from: Rover Saves Christmas (Mass Market Paperback)
Roddy Doyle became an instant hit with my nine year old (and thirteen year old) when we read 'The Giggler Treatment' together. A story whose central theme revolved around Mr Mack stepping into a pile of freshly laid poo and how Rover came to the rescue.
Consequently we immediately ordered the other two books in the series and we were not disappointed (they could have been longer). What is most enjoyable is how the characters all manage to have a say in how the story will proceed. One moment we are with Rover and the kids, the next moment the author (presumably Roddy is taking a coffee break while the story 'idles' and then suddenly Rover is egging the author to get back to his desk and continue writing. Wildy unpredictable - like Milligan but original. Highly recommended by both kids and myself

Hilarious,
This review is from: Rover Saves Christmas (Hardcover)
My 7 year old devoured this book in 2 days. Amid the sporatic chuckles came the inevitable "hey ma, listen to this.."as he came upon a particularly comical snippet that begged to be shared. This book sparkles with a unique charm, from the off-the-wall characters to the ever recurring chapter 6. The humorous, yet unsavory competition of 2 different advertisers dispersed between the pages offers a unique sense of the pervasive capitalization that only Christmas can bring. Don't worry if you dislike the ending of the book, for it offers a variety of conclusions for you to choose from. The lighthearted illustrations complement the book very well.

Not for less experienced readers...,

I was disappointed by... rave review for this book (which prompted our purchase). I haven't read any others in the series, but if they're similar, parents would do well to note my concerns. While this book is listed as appropriate for kids aged 9-12, it is really difficult for a 9-year-old to manage. It reads something like a sitcom script, with commercials included -- lots of fast cuts from one scene to another; wisecracking asides (many of which are probably only funny to those with a developed sense of irony, i.e., adults -- my daughter didn't laugh at all); and line after line of unattributed dialogue (no "he said" or "she said"), so readers are often confused about who said what. My daughter first read it silently, then I read it to her aloud, and it was still tough for her to follow. This would more likely appeal to those at the upper end of the 9-12 age group (although the "poo-poo" humor probably wouldn't appeal to kids that age), but it's very hard for some younger kids to follow. When the story follows a rare straight line for several pages it can be fun.
