An objective review.,

Did it work? No. Is my wallpaper now stained with a hideous blue gel? Yes. Did vinegar/hot water mix work better? Yes. What activities would you more readily undertake than ever using DIF again? Works Great-Questions Answered From Other Reviews,
This review is from: Zinsser 2466 DIF GEL Spray Ready To Use Wallpaper Stripper, 32-Ounce (Tools & Home Improvement)
This stuff works exactly as advertised. About 1/3 of a 32 oz bottle effortlessly removed 80 feet of border for me. The border was applied sometime in the last 10 years to a painted wall. I manually peeled the border off the wall, leaving only some of the paper and adhesive on the wall. If you can peel the paper off, DO IT as a first step. This will make the rest of the job easier. You only want to poke holes in paper as a last resort (if it doesn't come off AT ALL) since this will just increase your work. I sprayed the gel onto the adhesive and with a rag, spread it evenly so it could soak in. You can see when it's all soaked and ready to go. After about 10 min, it easily peeled off in long sheets. Do not leave it on so long that it dries - if gel dries, it's harder to peel off and you'll have to rewet it. I didn't even need an expensive wallpaper scraper - a cheap plastic putty knife was all I needed to pry up an edge so I could peel it off by hand. Now, gel is blue. But it doesn't stain walls - or at least not my wall which had cheap, flat, white paint. But that's because I wiped wall off with a rag once I was done. You really wouldn't just leave the gel, adhesive and small remnants of paper on wall, would you? And paint over it? It takes just a simple quick wipe with a wet rag to clean off the wall. Then there's no blue at all and you have a nice clean base if you're painting over all of this. I have a sensitive nose - this stuff does not smell at all. I also applied it without gloves. It was mild enough that my acrylic nails and nail polish were as shiny after I finished as when I started. I can't say as much for some bug sprays, which are caustic enough to remove polish and damage acrylic. All in all: mild, odorless product that does exactly what it's supposed to and is easy enough to use that someone who's never removed wallpaper ever had no problems at all.

I removed a full room of paper several years ago using a steamer. It was effective, but lets face it - steam is hot, so there is a risk of scalding yourself. I also had to keep towels all along the baseboards as I worked. This time I had a full kitchen/breakfast nook to do. Thought I'd try something that could not drip or scald, but the Dif Gel is a really poor performer. It leaves way too much scraping in my estimation. Did some more research and here's what we tried and it worked like a charm on high quality vinyl embedded paper that was very well pasted. (Should be the toughest to remove. If you are working with plain wallpaer, it should come down in one layer.) From a large retail hardware chain we bought Roman's "Piranha" wallpaper stripper. We scored the walls using a standard circular perforator, sprayed it, waited 10 min., and that allowed the paper to de-laminate. The vinyl layer just pulled away from the under layer in large sheets. The under layer, which is pasted to the wall, is usually where the real work is, but we found this system that made it almost effortless. We bought several yards of plain non-woven interfacing from the fabric shop, then cut several pieces appropriate for the wall spaces we were stripping (like between upper and lower cabinets, below chair rail, etc.) These we put in a bucket of warm water to moisten. Now we resprayed the under layer of paper with stripper, then laid the strips of interfacing over the top. The interfacing holds a layer of moisture against the wall while the stripper does its work. That's the key. If you let it begin to dry, the glue begins to reset. In about 10 minutes we could pull down the interfacing (which is used over and over) and the under layer of paper comes down in huge pieces or whole strips with almost no scraping at all. We did a 14x12 room, floor to ceiling, in about 5-6 hours, including removing/replacing outlet covers. switches, vents, etc. The non-woven interfacing can be dried, folded and kept for future jobs. It's tough stuff. Just be sure NOT to buy the version that is iron-on. That has a glue of its own!

You need to be patient!,

Ok, if we had or someone else had never wallpapered this wall we would not be it this situation now would we? But if you are looking up this product as I did, well we are in the same boat.My husband brought this home, so kind, for me to use and I quickly looked it up on Amazon. Thought I was in trouble from the reviews. Sooo not true. This is a great great product. The key is to be patient. You do need to wait at least 20 minutes. Your paper, or backing in my instance will peel right off. Then because I felt the need to use a gallon of paste for every foot of wallpaper I hung, you will need to spray again, let it sit for a few minutes and use a kitchen sponge with the ruff side and wipe off the paste using very warm water. Whola! you will never want to wallpaper again! This product does work, you just have to let it do its job before you begin yours.

This product did not work for me at all. A solution of vinegar and water is more effective and doesn't include a warning that it "contains a chemical known to cause cancer in the state of California". If you are having a tough time removing wallpaper, the best solution in my opinion is to purchase the Wagner Wallpaper Steamer... it is worth every penny!

I went to the Amazon site halfway through my first attempt at using DIF to strip a 20-year old non-strippable border. After the first application, the paper wasn't budging and I despaired of ever completing the job. I thought I would see what others' experience was using this product. When the reviews split down the middle between "works great" and "a waste of money," there is usually a trick to getting it to work. I scored the paper a second time, and applied more DIF, waited 20 additional minutes. It worked!! The paper peeled off with only minimal scraping. Success with this product may depend on the type of paper, but I also recommend scoring the dickens out of the paper (paper tiger works well for this) and applying the product heavily, a second time if needed. I found that a brush worked better for applying DIF than a roller. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it doesn't seem to be foolproof and, in my case at least, required some trial-and-error. I used the gallon bottle of brushable gel, not the spray bottle, I don't know if that made a difference.

I don't work for Dif, nor do I sell Dif in a company / on a website. I'm a 19 year old living at home on a budget, peeling off wallpaper that was on the walls of this bedroom since before we moved into this house about 8 years ago. Dif works magically, I have no issues peeling off the wallpaper. It took me a bottle and a half to peel paper off one wall and half of another. All I have is one more wall, and if I can't finish it with the rest of the second bottle, I will not hesitate to buy a third.

I only needed a small amount of DIF to remove a small section of wallpaper. Are there any other uses for this product?

NUMBER #1 way to remove wallpaper,
This review is from: Zinsser 2466 DIF GEL Spray Ready To Use Wallpaper Stripper, 32-Ounce (Tools & Home Improvement)
Ok, I am trying to move and sell my house and get rid of wall paper, so I have been doing this for the past two weeks and would like to share all of my experiments to help others...here is the complete and easiest way to remove wall paper without renting a tool...1. If you can, which mostly likely you cant, pull top layer off 2. Get a "scorer" tool...looks like a computer mouse with two gears under it 3. Score the heck out of the paper..you can't score enough! 4. Spray gel 5. WAIT 30 minutes and then spray with half and half mixture of vinegar and water 6. WAIT 20 minutes 7. Get spackle knife or wall paper blade and 80% of paper will come off easily..scrape as you peel 8. Peel remainder of top layer as much as possible 9. Spray again with vinegar solution and wait 10 minutes 10. Scrape again 11. repeat steps 9 and 10 again as much as possible All thanks and checks for this tips can be sent to me, thanks...;-)!! |
