About the Author

A former ITN and BBC Panorama correspondent, Alan Hart has a vast amount of first-hand knowledge of the conflict in and over Palestine. Over more than three decades he enjoyed intimate access to many of the leaders on both sides, and in particular, Golda Meir, Mother Israel, and Yasser Arafat, Father Palestine. Hart's book Arafat, Terrorist or Peacemaker?, first published in 1984, invited readers to consider the proposition that the PLO leader was ready, willing and able to make peace on terms which any rational government and people in Israel would accept with relief. Hart was also a participant at leadership level in the secret politics of the search for peace (as an intermediary between Arafat and Israeli opposition leader Shimon Peres when it was presumed that Peres would become prime minister

As a Jew who is originally from Eastern-Europe- Hungary- but who lived in Israel for a year and then moved to the U.S. 19 years ago, I was deeply familiar with the conflict itself, the origins of Zionism and the current dilemmas.
However, Mr. Hart's fascinating book shed a light on many somewhat hidden aspects of this conflict, and I am deeply grateful for him to do that.
-Actually I read all three volumes of his series on this subject.-
When one mentions the name of the country "Israel", almost everyone will have an immediate strong reaction. Since most people are either for it or against it, that reaction is either full of affection for it, or the opposite, full of hate.
I would think that this book makes one to choose a different path, one that a thinking person must take, in order to be honest about the actual situation. The main point of Mr. Hart's book is that Israel is not the mythical little innocent dove among the blood-thirsty hawks. Israel is the strongest military power of that region, and has been that for decades.
All the peace-loving Israeli leaders who wanted to negotiate with the Arab states, even back in the 1950's had been stabbed in the back by the right-wing military leaders, especially Dayan. The peace-process was mainly torpedoed by the extreme-right wing settler community who gave the spiritual and moral backing for the types that produced the killer of Yitzchak Rabin.
I could not emphasize it enough how important I think it is to read this book. One does not have to agree with each and every line of it, of course, but in general, it is obvious that the author is also deeply worried about the implications of the current situation, which is leading us to a very big confrontation with possibly disastrous consequences for the entire world.

I wish I had time to write a more detailed review. I became curious about what was going on in Israel/Palestine late in life, even though this conflict has defined our lives for many years, what with the 1967 war, the terror acts committed by the radical wing of the Palestine liberation movement, the 1973 war, the Israel invasion and occupation of Lebanon in the 80s, the attack on Iraq, the Palestinian intifadas, the 2006 Israeli attacks on Lebanon, the 2008 Israeli attack on Gaza. It was the 2006 terror bombings of Lebanon while failing to defeat Hezbollah which the U. S. government (President and Congress members of both parties) was largely silent or muted about despite its elements of state terror. I looked for sources of knowledge that could be informative about how we got to that point and found no comprehensive history of the sources of that conflict until mention somewhere of this series of three volumes of which volume 3 is the most page-turning, since the greatest cascade of ominous and jarring events has occurred in the era (1967-2010) it covers. I consider it (speaking of the three volumes together) the most important book I have ever read because it describes so well and in such depth how we reached this extremely dangerous stage we are at now.
There are a few things that stood out for me (in addition to the great debunking of many familiar myths of propaganda that Israel hides behind such as that Israel was ever in danger of being "driven into the sea"):
That any notion that Israel is a democracy is just fiction.

I have read a number of books on the Israel-Palestinian-Arab conflict. This one, is overall, the best. Its extensively researched. But its not just library research. He lived and travelled in the area during much of the time when these conflicts were occuring. And in many cases, the author mentions personal conversations with the actual people involved - Yasser Arafat, Golda Meir, King Hussain, Moshe Dayan, etc. If you want to really know what goes on in that part of the world from 1967 until present, this is the best book to get. This shows the conflict from inside the high commands of the Israelis, Americans, Palestinians, and other Arabs - explains what was going on, what was said in private, and how decisions were made.

Another excellent book is Gaza in Crisis by Chomsky and Pappe - but that book is much shorter and focused narrower.

Only a Jewish historian can recognize the terrorist movement that is Zionism. Readers need to look to Israeli/Jewish writers first for the truth. Ethnic cleansing supported by the US government will backfire into a new anti-Semitism.

I read this book in hard copy, but decided to acquire it in the electronic version.
The book gives a fresh and unbiased look at the most critical political issue of our times. The author deals with all parties equally and objectively.
He exposes the political undercurrent agenda concealing it by the all times deviousness of people's exploitation of religion, which is the easiest way to amass followers through inflamed faith-based emotions of belonging and fear, bypassing logic and rational thinking. Similar to what we see the reaction of the politically motivated religiously under covered Islamic what so called terrorism today, and elements of Christian terrorism.
The author analyses the issue from his perspective and brings the reality of another kind of terrorism that impacts the livelihood of people through incriminations and corruption to neutralize any descending voices.
