Book Description

Adrenal fatigue goes under-diagnosed in children, in fact, it is rarely diagnosed but is the underlying cause of symptoms in a large majority of kids.  Kids are put on amphetamine like medications or antidepressants, when hormone imbalances are a more likely cause of symptoms but are not tested or treated. Treating the adrenals is not hard, but does take awareness. Christine Gowey captures the essence of a message that needs to get to kids and parents alike on the necessity of taking life a bit slower, not being so active, and getting more sleep or eating better. Simple things can make a huge difference in the way a child feels.

This is a topic NO ONE is talking about for kids.  NO ONE is addressing the adrenal glands in children but Dr. Brandie Gowey, NMD has started to diagnose and treat it in kids with amazing results (in terms of reversing symptoms to normal).

I read this book with one of my 6 y.o. students. He asked, "Where are their mom and dad?" This made me think that because the emphasis is on the sibling helping the other that this book is such a great teaching tool for children from all family mixes so is perfect for parent-child reading, school proactive health reading/instruction, also public health distribution and pediatrician's distribution. The illustrations are fun. I liked the clearly stated and illustrated guidelines from Dr. B. I also liked the way the siblings watched out for the other, which is so true in healthy families. For a child who was not taught to look out for a sibling, this also models well.

Zip and Zap has an engaging storyline that is accentuated by amusing illustrations, both of which children can relate to. My grandkids request it be read frequently and sometimes refer to each other or role play Zip and Zap. I have a grandson, nieces, and nephews with auto-immune deficiency diseases, ADHD, and ASD. I also work in the field of special education. I view this book as a tool for parents and educators to use as a discussion opener with their children, students, and each with other. It can be useful for younger kids to understand why they need to have "special diets" or why they need to follow procedures that other kids may not have to. Also, it can be geared towards having older children recognize when they are feeling like Zap, then reflect on healthier life choices they can make to Zip it up. In addition, it can be used in classrooms as a springboard for a discussion on accepting and respecting peers that may have differences....culturally, inherently (traits), socially, or physically; and during small group discussions relating to self-monitoring and self-management skills.
I was unaware of "adrenalin fatigue" until I read this book. I have always professed that, "If I learn one thing or gain one insight, then the book was worth my time and money." Now I need to follow up with becoming more informed on this topic so I can share and discuss it with others!
I give this book 5 stars for its versatility and for providing an alternative explanation regarding ADHD/ADD characteristics along with suggestions for more optimum health.

This book is wonderful and very entertaining! Although it's great for any age, it's most beneficial for 4yrs and up.
Not only does the highlighted vocabulary make it easy for students to learn key words, but I also find it to be a beneficial tool to show students HOW our decisions affect our behaviors. This leads to teaching about perspective taking, aka which one would you want to be (or hang out with)? And, the reason behind it.

I am sorry that I only purchased one copy!! I enjoy reading it to my kids, and on my own too. It teaches on a level that a child can understand (and adults not familiar with the subject). I intend on buying several more copies of this amazing story and can't wait until Christine Ann Gowey's next book is published. Thank you Amazon.com for offering this amazing children's book to the world!!

I have 8 grandchildren and bought one for each; I thought the 9 year old would be too old. After she read my copy she said, but Grandma, this would be a great book to read to my little sister! All the kids loved their own copy and the artwork is beautiful. One of my other grandchildren said, yep, I need to take more naps like Zip & Zap! I love it. Would recommend definitely

Zip and Zap is fabulous picture book that starts your children out right by promoting healthy habits. It doesn't talk down to kids and includes definitions for vocabulary that they may not know. This book is a great way to begin a healthy living discussion with children at an early age. A must read! It should be shared with your children and grandchildren.

I think the author of this book for children has done an excellent job of demonstrating/illustrating cause and effect…..on our health. It is unique in its purpose and intent….so much so, that I think some adults could benefit from it. Seriously. I am giving it to my grandsons for Christmas (ages 6 and 8). Perfect ages to think about it!
