I just received my Zipit and I was pleasantly surprised to see it did NOT come in a clamshell package. You need 2 AA batteries to use The Zipit. I had to play with it for a minute before getting it to work just right but the included instructions give very good guidance. If I had bothered to read them before trying to use it myself I would have been better off. There are some good tips in there. Once I got it to work, it was FANTASTIC! For a mother who has cut several fingers trying to open those stupid clamshells this was a breath of fresh air. I am actually looking forward to the next clamshell I encounter. One more use that is NOT mentioned in the instructions...when used with the safety cap on you can easily cut open envelopes, even the thicker package envelopes. A nice added bonus.

Love The Zipit! I tried one of the other manual clamshell openers but this is much better. All you do is push a button and let the zipit do all the work. It's like an electric can opener for packages. It is wisely designed in a way that keeps your hand away from the sharp package "shrapnel" so you do not cut your fingers. I can't wait to use this for Christmas!

Anyone fed up with cutting your fingers while struggling to open those annoying clamshell packages that house many of your new purchases will LOVE this. I've seen others but this is THE one to get. It is the only automatic opener and it requires no effort to use...just push a button. The quality is outstanding. Makes a great gift.

If you're trying to cut a typical blister pack that has a right angle edge this may not work, even with the guard removed. If you're cutting something flat, and your cut is no more than 3/8" from the edge of the material, this will probably work. For $15 it's made well enough. Even though it's solid enough for the money, I coldn't find a single blister pack around the house that it would open...it will cut the plastic easily, but won't cut where it has to cut.

I'll try to post pictures to show what I mean. I bought this for a gift but concluded it didn't solve the problem enough of the time. I purchased a much more expensive Skil Power cutter for the gift, more power and no edge limitations.

This is one great little machine. I have tried it on thin plastic bags, to heavy plastic wraps. it cuts just great. It is not a child toy , common caution when using it. the Company has been great in standing behind their product. I have purchased 2 ZIP-its. It's actually fun to use since it takes the drudgery out of opening those nearly indestructible packages. It speeds up the process of getting to the prize! It works great on most plastic clamshell packages. I've only had trouble opening one or two diabolical packages that were irregularly shaped and had extra plastic strapping to hold the product in place.

For the first time I can open things without tugging and tearing up my hands. Better then pen knives or anything else I have tried. Not sure if it will work on the few pkgs that do not have even seems on the sides, but most of the pkgs i need to open do have the kind of sides this will open. It was NO problem and was fast and easy.

This is a great idea. However it needs some refining. I'm not crazy about the idea of having the cutting wheels exposed while I'm cutting, so I tried it with the guard on. After all, the slot in the guard looks like it is made to accommodate the edge of a package you're trying to open. It definitely works better with the guard off.
As mentioned in other reviews, there are some package designs the ZIPIT will open well. Others, not so much... It's kind of a fun "gadget" but I don't find it as useful as I had hoped.

Not all packages are created equal and this little gadget was not of great help for me.
I am glad it worked for others but I returned mine.
