5.0 out of 5 stars Zippo Multipurpose Lighter
I have used this type of lighter for over five years. It is versatile for many uses around the home, since I am not a smoker. 3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent lighter... until it comes time to re-fill.
Ours was purchased at Target, unfortunately Target doesn't carry the butane. You'd think butane would be an easy thing to find. Finally found a bottle of Pop-Lite butane 300ml (about 10 ounces) for $3 something at a liquor store. Unfortunately none of the nozzles work with this lighter (and Pop-Lite HAS worked with some of my previous torch-style lighters in the past)...

I have used this type of lighter for over five years. It is versatile for many uses around the home, since I am not a smoker. Our uses include: lighting the fireplace, barbecue, outdoor campfires, camp stove, candles for mood, and birthday candles. This Zippo is easy to use, is long enough to "reach" inside the fireplace or across a birthday cake, and has an adjustable flame. Being refillable with butane is a plus also, because unlike the conventional Zippo, butane does not have a strong odor to transfer to your hands during use. I highly recommend this lighter to anyone who is looking for a household lighting device. It is well made, safe (with 'dual' mechanism needed to light), and very sturdy (with the lifetime Zippo guarantee). Great lighter!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Zippo MPL Butane Lighter - Silver Satin 142543 (Misc.)
Wow, what an interesting purchase. I saw this on an online buyers guide of sorts, and it caught my eye. I hopped on Amazon and looked it up and found some good prices and put my order in. When I received this thing I was pretty floored. I am going to take some user-submitted images with my phone camera so y'all can see what I mean when I say: THIS THING IS HUGE! The images online (and lack of dimensions) made this thing appear pretty small to me. Functionally I think it works very well, aesthetically it is a really great lighter too. It took me a minute to get used to the safety-toggle and the slider switch, as they are offset and on opposing sides of the lighter for ergonomics. Great product, slightly misguided purchase but I am happy with it.

1.0 out of 5 stars I expected much more from a Zippo., November 28, 2008
This review is from: Zippo MPL Butane Lighter - Silver Satin 142543 (Misc.)
I expected more from Zippo. The design of this lighter is weak.

I imagine most people throw them away in disgust rather than returning to the manufacturer. I also must question the source of any 5 star review.

All the Butane Zippo products I have used suffer the same problems:

*Tiny fuel tank for a giant-sized device.

*Weak and ineffective electronic ignition.

*Over-engineered child-proof mechanism that is adult-proof as well.

I would return it to the manufacturer, but they would need to completely

re-design and manufacture an entirely new product to make me a happy customer and restore the damage that this lighter has done to the entire Zippo brand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Confirmed junk, September 30, 2008
This review is from: Zippo MPL Butane Lighter - Silver Satin 142543 (Misc.)
From Zippo brand and the retail price one would expect some level of quality. Not so with the Zippo "Multi-Purpose" MPL Lighter, not so.

I bought it for the cool looks and for known brand name. I've gone thru two of them in a short time (less than a year) with less than moderate usage (6 times per week).

Pros: 1. Brand name, 2. Sexy looks, 3. Feels solid (although it isn't).

Cons: 1. Extremely hard to operate - child-proof is more like anybody-proof, 2. Tiny-teeny gas tank; good only for a few light-ups, 3. Lack of gas tank gauge window - so you don't know if it broke already or just ran out of gas, 4. Very short lived product = junk.

I keep looking for a good lighter, preferably one made in USA.

Now the Zippo brand butane is for sale on Amazon right now for $3... plus $8 shipping. Yeah right, for 1.9 ounces? Something smells proprietary around here.

I bought a Bic and now the Zippo is a paperweight.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but you can probably do better..., September 28, 2008

I bought this exact same lighter from Shopko for lighting candles around my house.

Here are the Facts:

- It's sleek & attractive.

- It has an adjustable flame.

- It uses Butane.

- It's Easy to refill.

- It has a VERY annoying child safety feature.

- The slider has a LOT of push back, and may be difficult to use for some.

(especially with the child safety button)

Overall, it does its job, and looks nice.. so I cant say it's garbage.

However, the fact that you have to push on it like your trying to rub the paint off gets old very quickly.

I would recommend this to anyone. This is our third, the first two being stolen! I guess thieves know a good thing when they see it. It was a "must" replace.

1.0 out of 5 stars Future Land Fill, May 6, 2009
This review is from: Zippo MPL Butane Lighter - Silver Satin 142543 (Misc.)
I had been using $1.00 refillables for a few years, but decided to upgrade to this Zippo, thinking that the heavy duty construction would ultimately reduce my environmental impact (it comes with a lifetime warranty is states boldly on the package!). Since I use lighters in various places, I bought three of them, for $35.00! I figured, $35.00 is well spent if they will last me a long time and I won't have to produce as much garbage.

However, these lighters are very poor quality. All three of mine were operating poorly in less than a year, and within 18 months, two are now garbage, and the third lights about one of every 10 attempts. I'm an engineer, and I took my broken one apart to see how it is made. It is no different from the cheap cigarette lighters you can buy for 3.99 at a local smoke shop. Same basic technology.

Why worry you ask? Just take 'em back under warranty right? Problem is, Zippo wants $5.00 in shipping and handling fees to accept the return, and by the time you've paid your own shipping (plus insurance and tracking as Zippo suggests), your almost in for the cost of a new lighter. It seems Zippo has it worked out pretty well for themselves.

I am incensed that I shelled out $35.00 for this terrible product, and have ended up making more garbage than I would have with my cheapo $1.00 models, which used to last me about two years each. In my opinion Zippo's warranty is a come-on, and I fell for it hook line and sinker. It is one thing to make a lousy product, it is another to hook people in with what amounts to being a useless warranty.

I recommend you look elsewhere, unless you don't mind shelling out all that money for what amounts to a disposable lighter. A lot of the favorable reviews are from people who just bought them, or liked the way they look. I'd prefer to have a lighter that works well, over one that looks good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boo on the awkward childproofing feature!, February 2, 2012
This review is from: Zippo MPL Butane Lighter - Silver Satin 142543 (Misc.)
Why, oh why do we need a childproofed utility lighter? It is so frustrating. I am an adult who just wants a reliable lighter mainly to light candles so I don't have to breathe noxious match fumes which I am allergic to. So why does Zippo want to punish me by making a lighter that requires me to use two hands to operate it because the child-proof feature is awkward, difficult, & not ergonomic? Regular lighters don't have this dumb feature. If you're going to "child-proof" everything, then do it within the bounds of good design & functionality - which this lighter doesn't. I subtracted 3 stars due to this. The 2 stars are because I like that it is refillable (it's so difficult to find a longer utility lighter for home use that is refillable & not disposable so it doesn't end up in the landfill).
