4.0 out of 5 stars Zippo Handwarmer - almost identical to a Hakkin Peacock
I believe that the Zippo pocket handwarmer is made by the same Japanese company that makes the "Peacock"- The Hakkin company of Japan.

The hole pattern on the top of the Zippo warmer has a hole patterm similar to the chimney on a Zippo lighter. The Peacock has a hole pattern shaped like a Peacock, and is more elegant.

3.0 out of 5 stars Peacock burns warmer, zippo burns longer
I've used two Zippo hand warmers for about 5 years now, and swore by them....until, the burners failed and I realized that Zippo doesn't sell new ones, which means you have to but a new one or write the company (which I did) and hope they send you a replacement. 4.0 out of 5 stars Zippo Handwarmer - almost identical to a Hakkin Peacock, February 24, 2007

The Zippo filler flask is ok, but the one supplied with the Peacock is superior. It is a funnel with a valve that fits on the fill area of the unit. When the funnel is rotated 90 degrees, the valve opens and fluid is inserted with no spillage. Not so with the Zippo filler flask.

The bag for the Peacock is a drawstring closure, where Zippo uses velcro. The Zippo bag has a big Zippo label on it, where the Peacock does not and is more formal (I prefer the simpler style). The Zippo bag is black, while the Peacock bag is green (shows less pocket lint than black)

The burners -- Both units share the same burner - which Hakkin offers individually. However the Zippo burner is stamped "Zippo" as is the base of the unit with a huge "Zippo".

The quality of the Peacock & Zippo is superior to that of the Jon-E.

For the similar price of the units, get the Peacock. The Zippo is a close second due to cosmetics and accessories.

Also, any brand of lighter fuel can be used (you don't have to use zippo fuel)

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous hand warmer, December 17, 2006

Compared to other "similar" warmers I have used in the past, this device shows typical Zippo quality and attention to detail. Easy to fill, using the included measuring device for half- or full-day warmth. Easy to light, with a color-change heat detector on the cap to verify ignition. And, just as advertised, produces abundant warmth for hours. No leaks, no problems, just heat. My wife loves it for her hands and even tucks it into the small of her back when she is extra chilly. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is HOT STUFF!, November 9, 2008
This review is from: Zippo Hand Warmer High Polish Chrome Pocket Lighter (Sports)
I bought a pair of the Zippo hand warmers and with great results. I have extremely cold fingers during the Fall and Winter. They turn numb constantly when I'm outside. Gloves help very little. The Zippo's fire up and get hot. One definetly must use the protective bag or the Zippo becomes a "HOT POTATO". With the bag its perfect!
I even use the Zippo under my hat to keep my half bald head warm. Use it for anything that gets cold.

I would recommed the Zippo hand warmer to anybody who needs one.

Rick

5.0 out of 5 stars Ummm, warm!, January 1, 2008
This Zippo Hand Warmer does exactly as advertised. That is, it gives off very welcome heat for several hours after you start it -- something I enjoyed on a cold New year's Eve.
You fill it with lighter fluid using the little measuring device that comes with it. Then you light it. Then you put it into its little pouch and stick it in your pocket, where it reliably provides you with hours of delicious heat. That's it. Get one if your hands are cold.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the Job, December 27, 2007

First of all, it's bigger than you'd think. It's bigger than my palm. It threw me off a bit because I'm used to Zippos being tiny. That's not a bad thing though - it'd be hard to warm your hands with something that tiny.

It works well - surprisingly well. I work in an office writing code all day, and for some reason my hands get cold just typing all the time, so this is great.

Keeping the warmer in the fleece bag that it comes with is nice, but prevents it from really warming your hands. Once you take it out, the warmer will get a lot hotter, so if you leave it aside for 5 minutes, be careful when you pick it up. Putting it back in the bag will bring it back down to a holdable temperature. Also, the Zippo "premium" lighter fluid that comes with it isn't necessary for refills, but it does burn hotter and smell cleaner. As someone who likes to leave the thing outside of the bag, burning hotter isn't necessarily a good thing.

All in all, I like this thing and I'm glad I bought it. Just wished that bag let a bit more heat through it.

I called Zippo and someone told me to send in the old burners and they would send replacements. I did this and nothing came for a year, so I called back and they sent two right out.
THE MAIN REASON FOR THIS REVIEW IS TO SAY:
I found two old Peacock hand-warmers whose burners had also failed years ago and found a company in U.K. that sold them. I bought two for $8 and fired up the warmers after the burners came. I was delighted to find that the Peacocks gave off about twice as much heat. Even though they last half as long, you can still manage to get 8 hours of great heat for those times you need it.
Couldn't find any in the states, but you can get them from the U.K. at :http://www.peacockhandwarmers.co.uk/thanks2.php

Everything about this device is quality, good design, well built. Filled it up and it operated for 48 hours without a refill. Smooth and small, about the size of a pack of playing cards, but slim and thin. Curved edges very nice. Comes with Velcro pouch, nice touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Hand Warmer, January 9, 2007
If you are out in the cold and its important for your hands to be warmed then you need these hand/pocket warmers!

They are even great for just being outside for a walk! I have poor circulation and MUST keep my hands warm to avoid pain and these warmers do the trick!

This works well and will stay warm for 18-24 hours as stated, but is very difficult to fill. The cup provided to fill is useless because the cotton packing is so dense that the fluid does not easily go into the chamber and pours down the side. I had better luck purchasing a small funnel and pushing the tip into the cotton packing. There was still some spillage but not as much. Obviously, it's necessary to make sure all the lighter fluid has evaporated from your hands and the outside before trying to light.
