Got this unit for Christmas as a replacement for one I've had about 8 years which died. I watched the useless video that came with the unit (it does not have the i320 on the video), read the instructions sheet and searched the zircon website. Nowhere can I find "Troubleshooting Help". The unit worked for about 10 seconds and found one stud. After that it would start the calibaration process but after about six seconds of beeping and blinking just shut itself off. I thought maybe the battery I used was bad. Put in a brand new battery straight out of the pack and the same thing. For $40 I would certainly expect something to at least work for a few weeks. This was awful, I'll be getting my son's money back from HD...

Tried the e50 and was disappointed. Thought I would by this more expensive unit. The unit works great for finding wood wall studs. But was totally disappointed in the deep scan mode. Trying to find wood floor joists through 5/8 inch particle board over 1/2 inch plywood. It could not find one joist, sad as zircon usually makes a good product. But their deep scan technology sucks.

I've owned probably 5 zircon stud finders. All died early and none were worth the money I paid. I'll never buy another zircon product as long as I live. I hate their products they are cheap no matter what you pay it's to much. Do not buy this product if you expect to find a stud. This last zircon product will be smashed with a hammer until I can no longer make out the name.

I purchased the next model down this summer when I was working on my parents bathroom. It claimed there was a stud. There was not. So this time I purchased this top model because it was readily available at the local "big box" store. What a joke! I tired it first on 5/8 dry wall (deep scan). Oh yea, it identified a stud, 1.5 inches from where it was actually located! So I went to the bathroom with 1/2 drywall. It found it in the right place. My advise: stick with the cheap ones for 1/2 drywall and stay away from this brand on any drywall over 1/2 an inch.

I bought one of these locally and returned it immediately. The thing would not locate studs half the time, and when it did finally locate them it was inconsistent. Every time I did a scan it would change the location of the edge by 1/2" or more. Then if you are doing a scan and it takes more than 30 secs the thing would get your hand tired; and if you try to reposition your hand at all it would reset and force you to re-calibrate again.

I found it very helpful. looking for solid backing on a fireplace I had expected to be brick, it was in fact plastered studwork but the studfinder found two timber studs immediately. It saved a lot of trial and error and time. very impressed with it as was my diy friend who was helping me.

I have read all the few 6 to be exact reviews and really think it comes down to not knowing how to use this stud finder. clearly put if you are just looking for a stud behind standard drywall use the stud mode and what will happen is it will first show you your stud edge... mark this point next it will beep and the laser goes on for your center mark this point... next it will show the other edge mark this point as well. As with any measuring tool measure twice drill or cut once. If it's not accurate do it again. And lets not forget life before stud finders knock the darn wall to be sure there's your manual confirmation. Come on stop being so crazy. Now onto the deep scan mode ..... I have found studs way more than 11/8" deep as another reviewer said he couldn't even do that. I found studs appx 4" on the other side of the darn wall !!! and the great thing was it also told me there was live A/C current there as well and you now what I checked and there was a outlet exactly where it said in the next room !!!! so what are they talking about the deep scan doesn't work ? it works just fine. now to the metal side and this was of great interest to me as a hvac / plumbing guy yes it does work but you need to dial it in so to speak within a narrowing range. So lets say you detect metal mark the first point you detect and then keep going and it will beep again a few inches later mark this point. this is your refrence point. Now go back to your first marking and move towards the other mark and it will beep again but a little closer this time. do the same from the other mark inwards and again it will beep a bit closer, do this one more time and your on the metal dead on and believe me it does locate the pipes 100% accurately. Another trivial stupid little test I did for fun....Read more ›

absolute crap... i paid a premium price for what was supposed to be a premium stud finder..... This stud finder excelled at finding non-existent phantom studs and missing actual studs. It is absolutely unreliable and will lead to wasting lots of time and much frustration.

I had these results regardless of surface type and with fresh batteries (tested with multi-tester).

It's such a piece of crap that I gave it to a 5 year old for his toy tool kit. (I would have returned it if I could etc etc).
