Stud finder,

This review is from: Zircon MultiScanner i700 Center-Finding Stud Finder with Metal and AC Electrical Scanning and DVD How-To guide (Tools & Home Improvement)
The Zircon multiscanner i700 is very easy to use and finds the center of the stud very quickly. It has a built-in marker which is very helpful. I have another Zircon multiscanner, but it only finds the leading edge of the stud; therefore you must pass over the stud and scan back to find the other edge and mark the center. The i700 is far superior.

I had an older Zircon stud finder and it was always a frustration. I bought this i700 Zircon and was stunned at how the technology had improved. It came with elaborate instructions and even a DVD, but I didn't need any of that. It was intuitive and took me about a minute to figure out. The battery was even included.
I tested it on a wall in which I knew where the studs were located. It was dead accurate. It has several modes, clearly marked: wood studs, metal studs, AC... It displays in red letters which mode it is in, and shows a graphic for the edge and middle of the stud. When you hit the middle of the stud a red beam projects straight out from the device. If you push a central bottom (clearly labeled) it will even leave an erasable mark. No need for a pencil. You can do it all with one hand. This is the perfect stud finder. I can't praise it enough.

Very easy to use with an easy to read display. Highly accurate stud location. My only complaint is that the unit is rather large, but overall I am very pleased with it.

The first thing I have to note here is the crazy price amazon seller are charging for this! $72.75?? That is a huge jump up from just around th 40 dollars amazon charged before they ran out of stock. I bought mine at Home Depot for 49, those resellers are really overcharging for this thing. The number of stars I gave it doesn't take that into account, but my personal opinion for anyone looking is that while this is good, it's NOT worth 72 dollars at all, and you can get it much cheaper.
The reason I give this product 4 stars is because it finds the center of the stud, and it does so fairly well. That's better than my old cheaper stud finder which just found the edge, and you'd have to calculate where you think the center is. The consistency with this is good, but not great- if I try multiple times the center is generally in the same spot, sometimes there is a little variation but overall pretty good. But sometimes the signal gets weak and it thinks the stud is too deep even when I know it's not. The AC finder is the main area where it did not perform well for me though. It seemed to just find spots randomly- getting a positive in one spot once, and then nothing the next time I treid the same spot. I'd put it all around an outlet with active appliances and get nothing sometimes. For me, its poor enough that I don't feel I can rely on it whatsoever. If I could give it 3 1/2 stars I think I'd go with that. Still, I bought it to find studs, and if that's what you're buying it for, it works- and the marker is a useful touch. I believe there is a cheaper model (the i65) for much cheaper which finds the center too though, and it got good reviews on Amazon. If it finds the center as well as this one, I'd say buy that one over this.

Hello,
I bought the Zicron Multiscanner i700 after seeing this product on a home repair show. This stud finder is awesome, I would recommend that give your stud finder away and purchase this one because of the following: 1. It is easy to use 2. Finds the center of the stud 3. It has a built in marker 4. The LED is easy to read 5. Finds stud's both metal and wood as well as A/C 6. Great price

Poor performance on anything but interior drywall.,

Used on smooth finish exterior plaster. Multiple false signals left me with 3 holes in my wall and no studs. Clumsy spring loaded multiple piece design turns it on when held against the wall - I found it to be odd. Good display and convenient built in marker but its got to be accurate to be useful. It was accurate on interior drywall but no more accurate than my old $10 one when tested side by side. Why spend the money?

This Zircon is lightyears ahead of the one I bought several years ago. Really nice to have the center of the stud identified.

My wife bought me this for Christmas after I searched around for a decent model and did my homework. I found it to be very accurate even on my old sheet rock walls, this is not Sheetrock brand but the old stuff.
I used it first to hang a dart board in my recording studio. The metal finder works, as does the live AC finder. It is very easy to use, read the directions first! Both parts need to be against the wall for it to turn on and engage. It comes with a Duracell battery, which was another good sign, if most products even come with a battery they are cheap, this wasn't. This is by far the best detector I've used and I wish I had gotten it earlier.

Does this product do what the manufacturer claims?
The answer is yes and no. It does when the conditions are right and you are using it surfaces that it "likes", but if you use it on surface that reflect in ways it doesn't like then it doesn't find studs. I used it on dry wall that was painted over and it worked in some spots and not others. This piece of machine is fussy in the surface you use it on so you might want to try and cover your surface with a thin piece of wood, calibrate and rescan. When it does work, it is better than mot others. Is it a reasonable, competitive price? Not at all. You can get it at your local HD for $50. I understand amazon charges 20% commission for those selling on this site, but it doesn't mean the 3rd party sellers should pass the mark-up on to the buyer plus shipping and then try for profits on top of it all. So buyer beware and know that you can buy it cheaper at a brick and mortar shop close by. It is worth $50, but you will probably want to have other stud finding tools (with different detection methods) in your toolbox for the surfaces this product doesn't like. Definitely not worth $75! |
