Introducing the New StudSensor e50

The StudSensor e50 quickly and easily locates the edges of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors, and ceilings. It has two scanning modes that allow you to scan more surfaces in your home than normal stud finders:

  • STUD SCAN mode locates the edges and center of wood or metal studs in normal walls up to 3/4 inch (19 mm) deep
  • DEEPSCAN mode doubles the scanning depth for walls up to 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) deep, and it enables scanning for joists in some ceilings and floors

For the e50, Zircon has wrapped up their proven, patented technology into a revolutionary new form. The e50's new body design can be held comfortably in either hand at any angle and reduces normal scanning errors. The rubber overmolded grip also gives you a secure hold.

In addition to a new shape and updated components, the StudSensor e50 offers several additional features to make finding studs and joists as easy and as accurate as possible:

  • Easy-to-read LCD display indicates stud edges
  • Updated SpotLite Pointer shines an arrow-shaped light on the wall to mark the target
  • WireWarning detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded electrical wiring up to 2 inches (51 mm) deep
  • Should scanning begin over a stud, Zircon's patented "over-the-stud" indication alerts the user to start the scan in a new location
  • Patented TruCal technology indicates when the tool is calibrated and ready to scan

The StudSensor e50 is a higher-end edge-finding tool, striking the right balance of affordability and features for casual users. Not sure if the e50 is what you need? See the grid below to decide which edge-finding tool is right for you.

Why Zircon?

Zircon introduced the first stud finders over 25 years ago. We're a smaller, more focused company than our competitors, but thanks to our reputation for engineering and customer service, our brand dominates the stud finder market domestically and abroad. The Handyman Club of America, and their official publication, Handy Magazine, have awarded Zircon's StudSensor e50 their seal of approval after a round of extensive member testing. The e50 earned a 9.0 (out of 10) overall rating and a whopping 99% approval rating from Handyman Club Members.

From the Manufacturer

Zircon's new line of stud finders features updated electronics in an amazing new form that's easy to hold at any angle. Two scanning modes find the edges of wood or metal studs or joists up to 1-1/2-Inch deep. WireWarning detection indicates the presence of hot electrical wiring. Easy-to-read LCD screen, updated arrow-shaped SpotLite Pointer and audio tone clearly indicate stud edges. Inlcudes 9 inch magnetic level.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY HAPPY June 15, 2010

I was very skeptical as to whether this unit would work for my application. I'm a bit familiar with ultrasonic and microwave technology so I expected that it was at least possible for this unit if it used either technology to work.

My application was to recover an old shed roof with half inch pressure treated plywood (mineral impregnated) over 3/8 plywood covered by mineral surfaced 90 weight asphalt felt. I needed to accurately locate the rafters beneath all of that for nails and screws.

Sure enough after starting in a location without a stud the unit fired up and calibrated itself and on the deep setting accurately located the adjacent studs through all of those layers. I was well pleased.

Very much worth the price for getting the job done right and no putting in a buch of unsealed holes or wasting screws and nails.

I just bought a Zircon StudSensor e50 and used it to find a space between wall studs so that I could install a small built-in shelf in a bathroom. The sensor is a little tricky to use, identifying studs in one slow pass and then not identifying the same ones in a second check-up pass. So, I spent quite a bit of time checking and rechecking until I had marked several positives in the same vertical planes at various heights.

Now, sure of the spacing of the studs, and corroborating that they had the same spacing as the opened wall on the other side of the bathroom, I confidently started breaking up the plaster. You can guess what happened: The hole opened immediately to the right of an extra stud the sensor did not catch (apparently bracketing the iron ventilator pipe that the sensor also did not pick up on, which could be excused as it was about 2" behind the wall, just past the sensor's Deep Scan option's reach).

So, caveat emptor: This sensor may have a tendency to false negatives, even despite several repeat passes in both Stud Scan and Deep Scan modes. I'm out $20, and a fun home improvement project has just become an unfun plaster repair project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised, but don't expect miracles February 7, 2011

This stud finder works as advertised. No, it will not magically find studs and say, "drill here," but it reliably finds studs beneath ordinary drywall. I did not test it on doubled-up drywall or other surfaces. As with all stud finders, you have to use the technique described in the included instructions. And, you have to be willing to take a series of readings and then average their centers. It is worth being patient as this will result in a good, solid find every time. I give it 5 stars because it works as advertised (when the directions are followed) and the price is, in my view, very good.
