5.0 out of 5 stars The Teen Years, September 23, 2000
This review is from: Zits: Sketchbook 1 (Paperback)
When a strip has a name as tasteful and enlightening as "Zits," you know it'll be a winner. And the third "Sketchbook" just came out!

The absence of "Calvin and Hobbes" left a hole in the witty humor department for a very long time (the WP newspaper has replaced it with the abysmal "Boondocks") but Zits has an almost eerie similarity to it in structure--as well as the fact that Jeremy has a remarkable resemblance to a six-foot-tall Calvin. It's "Calvin: The Teen Years."

Jeremy Duncan is a fifteen-year-old boy who lives in an average home in the suburbs. He tolerates his out-of-it-but-smart parents Walt and Connie, secretly longs for the unattainable Sarah (think of Susie at fifteen), and hangs out with best friend Hector (Hobbes has morphed into a Hispanic high-schooler with more wisdom than Jeremy can ever have).

Jeremy is such an "ordinary" teenager that it's astounding. He longs to be dangerous and edgy, but only makes himself look weird in the process. His schemes and daydreams are funny and very realistic. Hector is the best friend we all want--he's wise, funny, interesting, and against his better judgement he always goes along with Jeremy.

But this isn't a joke at the expense of the parents: Walt and Connie are almost as funny as their son. Though he thinks they are clownish pains, they are actually much smarter than he gives them credit for. "Un-chill" and passe, Connie has a biting wit and Walt a quiet wit. Parents will definitely sympathize.

If you're an adult, you'll be transported back to your teenage years. If you're a teen, you'll nod in agreement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Strip Can Relate, January 3, 2000
This review is from: Zits: Sketchbook 1 (Paperback)
This book is full of strips that can relate to almost every teenagers life. Everything from having a girlfriend to the actions made towards the parents by Jeremy(the teenager), and the actions of the parents towards him. After reading this book I found that almost every strip related to me. It's good reading for all ages (if you can read), so I recommend that you check this book out. You won't regret buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the ultimate summit of cartooning art!, September 5, 1999
This review is from: Zits: Sketchbook 1 (Paperback)
Today, the cartoon characters are so often grotesque and dysfunctional. Not so in Zits! For the majority of us THIS is a refreshing, good old peek at humor with class, talent, and superb art. The reader can identify with Jeremy, his friends, his experiences, and the parents' perspective. It is a magical combination of first rate profound humor that we can all relate to with clearly unparalleled artistic expression.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take it from a mother of a teenager -, April 6, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Zits: Sketchbook 1 (Paperback)
- this is a WONDERFUL, witty, funny, very true to life and very sweet representation of a teenager's day-to-day struggles. I have a teenage son who, while in high school, lived 'Zits'! I had saved many of my newspaper's strips to bring home and show him because of the similarity to what we were talking about at breakfast. I finally bought this book (I opened the first page and laughed out loud in the store!) and read it in one sitting cover to cover! I love it! It makes fun of all the teenage tragedies, parents, girlfiends, music, tests, all of it, and it does it with such wonderful sense of humor! I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Charming in its Frankness., May 6, 2001
By
This review is from: Zits: Sketchbook 1 (Paperback)
So, Calvin and Hobbes are gone.

Micheal and Elizabeth Patterson are no longer teenagers.

Where does one find the humor of teenagers and children? With this marvelous strip, we can be calmed in this world of headphones, Playstation 2's and constant self questioning. Teenagers are given the opportunity to laugh at themselves, with an excuse; they are SUPPOSED to! No one has to reveal that they are laughing at their best friend, or their boyfriend or girlfriend...because it is a comic strip! In the absense of a little boy and his tiger, of two siblings growing up together in Canada, Zits is a new addition to the childhood classics, which will come to be loved by all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining, March 1, 2001
By
This review is from: Zits: Sketchbook 1 (Paperback)
As a teenager myself, I find myself looking to the Zits comic strip for that little hint of personal relation. There are times while I'm reading that I can definately relate, while at others, I just laugh out loud at how unlike me something might be. An overall great comic strip. If you're yet to read one, this is definately a great book to start with. You'll be yet to regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny , enjoyable and true to life, January 2, 2001

Arielle M. Dundas (Wassenaar, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Zits: Sketchbook 1 (Paperback)
If you like zits I recommend you buy this book it has some of the earliest comics in it so if you are even a slightly recent reader they will probably be new to you. If you don't follow zits I recommend that you do. The comics are always funny, enjoyable and nice to look at. Not to mention true to life, this is exactly the way a 15-year-old boy would act towards his friends, parents and life, albeit with a slightly comic spin. This being the first zits sketchbook I recommend you start with this one.

This review is from: Zits: Sketchbook 1 (Paperback)
I love your cross-reference of Zits with the category of Women's Studies. How true! Jeremy's mom wasn't born yesterday in the Assertive World. Looking forward to the new "Zits III" issue coming out in March, 2000. Hope mom still has her tart tongue and sharp wit.
