I was given this book at Christmas and took a while to start it because Robert Edric meant nothing to me. It is quite simply a riveting read, and a book of great artistic merit. This is a very important novelist who seems to constantly operate beneath the celebrity radar. I am reminded of my friend J.G Farrell. Since 'In Zodiac Light' I have been reading my way through his oeuvre, (which is extensive - hurray!) and both pleasure and respect grow by the book. This shares their characteristic features - people you'll believe in and be interested to meet, situations that carry you forward both in terms of engagement and of tension, and - quite unusually - a really satisfying after-taste, a sense that you understand something more about being alive. I can't recommend this book enough.
