Zoeller 30-0181 Check Valve & Union

Each end of this valve has a stepped outside diameter; 1.25" on the end, and 1.50" next to the valve body; refer to the Customer Images. It comes with two rubber adapters and four stainless steel clamps. The adapters convert 1.25" to 1.5" or vice-versa. The 1.5" adapter end will slip over a 1.5" PVC pipe, and 1.25" will slip over a 1.25" PVC pipe. In other words, using the supplied rubber adapters, either end can be configured to 1.25" or 1.5".

It's easy to connect this device using a clamp screw. To remove the device, or slip one end off a pipe, loosen one of the clamp screws and slide the pipe out; hence "union" in the name. This feature allows removal of the sump pump for service or replacement, without cutting any pipe.

This is a full flow check valve, unlike some models at my local Lowes or Home Depot, which partially restrict flow. When a sump pump comes on, the valve flap swings completely out of the way, to allow maximum flow. When the pump stops, the flap closes to stop water from going toward the pump. The rubber seal part of the flap will eventually leak a bit, I suppose, but there is so little pressure on it when it's closed, that it should last a long time.

Our sump pumps were installed with a check valve within the sump basin, since the discharge level was less than a foot above the sump basin. When the pump shuts off, if you don't have a check valve, all water still in your exit pipe that's higher than the pump will flow back into the basin. Otherwise, the only water that will flow backward into the basin is the small volume of water between the pump and the check valve. In addition, a check valve prevents mice, insects, etc. that crawled in through your exit pipe, from making it all the way to your sump pump. When the water comes on, critters should be washed away.

We have this check valve on each of our sump pumps. Excellent product.

This check valve is a totally reliable and durable product, and it's worth every penny to know that you don't have to worry about back-flow issues. I just bought a new check valve along with a new sump pump, but to be honest, I could have kept using the 10 year old Zoeller check valve on the old pump. They recommend replacing the check valve any time you replace a pump, but these things last forever!

High quality product, worth the money. Full-flow design that should last a very long time. Much better product than the imported valves stocked at the local stores.

Packaging was a little iffy (foam-lined envelope), but the valve came through just fine.

Seems to be a much better engineered product than what I found on the shelf at my local Home Depot and Lowes. Cost is same or lower than what the big box stores stock.

After looking at Zoeller sumps pumps on Amazon I thought the check valve was the same green coated metal as the Zoeller M-53 Sump Pump. The Zoeller Check Valve is made of plastic. Nowhere in the description does it state the valve is made of metal, so I mention this only for the benefit of anyone who may make the same mistaken assumption that I did.

Higher quality valve than what is available at the big box stores. Installed it with no problems. This valve is quieter than the cheap valve it replaced, but I can still hear it close. Didn't buy the valve for noise reduction though ... rather bought it to be a check valve. Which is does nicely. Would recommend and buy again.

If you are replacing a sump pump my suggestion is to replace the valve too. This makes a BIG DIFFERENCE in the performance of your sump pump! Both the sump pump and the valve work very well together and do just what it is supposed to do!

This was a good purchase. I have several additional like check valves. It works as intended without issues. I would purchase this item again.

Far superior to the cheap check valves sold by the big box stores. This works exactly as advertised but you must follow the instructions and install it horizontally. This valve is not recommended to be used in a vertical application as one users picture shows. It clearly reads mount this side up and for a horizontal installation printed right on the valve case. Works great and as expected.

I use this check valve with an old Zoeller pump that came with my (also quite old) house, with about 7 feet of head.

I note no issues of hammering noises or such, as installed, with 1.25" corrugated flexible tubing heading outside. I can see how it might easily be an issue for those who have rigid piping, though, since things do move around a bit when the pump stops.

The only issue I have, which would happen with any check valve in my case, is that the discharge line freezes solid in the coldest Ohio weather with this old, drafty house (and its purposefully-cold basement). Removing the check valve solves this issue, as it allows the line to drain completely after each cycle.

So, in the spring, I put the valve in (to save the energy of refilling the line, and increase the time between runs). In the late fall, I remove it (to keep the lines from freezing). The clamps and adapters included with this pump make this job a breeze, and show no signs of wear from these regular changes.

I've only had it for about 3 years, but so far, so good. If or when it ever shows any sign of failure, I'll buy another one just like it.

Very nice check valve...much less expensive than others. went on in a couple of minutes.
