4.0 out of 5 stars A must for those who love rice....
I own this size and the much larger 10c version of this cooker. The cooker works very well with long grain varieties such as Jasmine and does very well with Japanese rice. However, for basmati one should work with this one a bit to get the right consistancy while brown rice can prove a little difficult. I found that the pressure cooker worked better for short grain...

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for those who love rice...., May 15, 2000
This review is from: Zojirushi NRC-10W Deluxe 5-Cup Rice Cooker & Warmer (Kitchen)
I own this size and the much larger 10c version of this cooker. The cooker works very well with long grain varieties such as Jasmine and does very well with Japanese rice. However, for basmati one should work with this one a bit to get the right consistancy while brown rice can prove a little difficult. I found that the pressure cooker worked better for short grain brown than this cooker.

For most households this cooker is great. It is pretty goof proof and the interior is teflon coated so the problem issues of the old aluminium models leaching into the rice is now over.

One should consider that to cook proper Japanese rice that the rice must be soaked before cooking while Jasmine/long grain do not. But those are considerations of the cook and are not the fault of the cooker.

I recommend this for both house and college dorm. It is easy to maintain and the warming function is reliable. Though it is more expensive than other brands you will get ALOT of use from it and it is sturdy as can be. If you plan to eat rice a great deal this model is fine. If you are only planning to eat rice only occasionally than maybe a cheaper model will do. This line also comes in floral patterns for those who want something different from the plain white.

I cannot stress enough that no matter what model or brand one of rice cooker to be bought one should be sure that the interior is either teflon or stainless steel. Taking aside the contention that aluminium and Alzheimer's connection I will argue that it makes the flavor of the rice slightly off and also your pans will wear out more quickly if you keeping losing an aluminum layer each time you clean.

Highly recommended for home and gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Literally can't live without it, January 21, 2002

Being vegan, I eat a lot of rice. This rice cooker has made making rice a joy, and I usually make a combination of white and brown short grain rice- as long as I measure correctly and fill the water up to the line as it says in the instructions, they both come out perfectly, every time. I've steamed some veggies and made some congee, and no surprises, just great yummy food. But, I did get tired of having to yank the cord out whenever I turned it off, so I got a 1.00$ part at the hardware store so I can just flip a toggle switch instead. It keeps rice warm for days, so I only need to turn it off after I have cleaned it and there is no rice to be cooked. I wouldn't use another rice cooker if you paid me! I love it.

I just got this for my Birthday & can't stop using it! Jasmine & Basmati work great. We had no burnt or crispy rice. I'd say, follow the directions & you'll have no problems! :-)

I was looking for a rice cooker and read good things about this one, Zojirushi has a very good reputation. I unpacked it and washed the spoon, non stick pan and measuring cup and started my first batch of rice. It is a 5 cup and it says 1 to 5 cups of uncooked rice so I tried 1 cup. I opened the cover 10 minutes after the cook cycle ended and stirred it and quite a bit of the rice was very brown on the bottom. Also there were little what looked like plastic sheets very lightly stuck to the side of the pan and you could peel them off it was definitely from the rice. I tried another batch with the same results. I contacted Zojirushi directly. I was using Nishiki rice the tech said they used the same. He told me that it can be hard to cook 1 cup of rice. He said ignore the markings in the pan and mix equal amounts of water and rice. He also told me to fill the pan with just enough water to cover the bottom and no rice and run it through the cook cycle and if it looked like raindrops inside when finished it was working properly but if there was a puddle of water left in the pan then the pan was bad. I ended up with a puddle of water and called Zujiroshi back and got a different tech and explained step by step what I did and he said I must have a warped pan, but that should not cause the rice to brown. He told me I should be able to cook 1 cup of rice and to make sure I rinsed the rice until the water was clear. This person told me I should use the markings on the pan. I made sure I rinsed it very good and tried again. With a lot of effort and trying all different things you can get it to be less brown but it also seems like the rice is hard when the cook cycle ends and even after 15 minutes or so after that it seems harder than it should. I have had rice at different peoples houses from basic rice cookers and you just add the water and rice and it comes out great with very little effort and there is no reason why it should take so much efort with this to get just ok rice. I ordered it online and am sending it back(30 day money back refund) and it sounds like the company I ordered it from is saying if they plug it in and the light comes on they will not consider it defective and they will not try to make rice with it. I like the design, it comes apart for easy clean up and I would have to believe something is not right with this but because of the way the company that I bought it from is willing to handle this I am just going to get my 30 day refund back which I am entitled to. My next purchase will be at a local store. So I am left to wonder what was wrong? Would another one do the same? There are not a lot of 5 cup rice cookers around here. My next choice will probably be either the Panasonic SR-SH15PS Which is an 8 cup, a little bigger than I need or a basic National with a glass cover which I would probably go for but I can get the Panasonic for just about the same price maybe a little cheaper.

3.0 out of 5 stars Check the rice type before you choose this one, July 20, 2001

I got this cooker based on the reviews and rating but now I am returning this after trying this for a week. The cooker has excellent features and retractable cord for easy handling but has some flaws in its design in adjusting to rice types. we were using basmati or parboiled rice and the manual doesn't really say how much water adjustment we need to make based on the rice type . The rice was boiled fine only at the top and at the bottom the rice had burnt and had a brown color. We tried several water levels with the rice but the burnt rice at the bottom was always the problem. Think twice before choosing this brand of cooker

5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but well worth it..., January 3, 2002

This review is from: Zojirushi NRC-10W Deluxe 5-Cup Rice Cooker & Warmer (Kitchen)
This rice cooker is excellent in all ways. It is significantly more expensive than other models, but it seems to be worth it. I have never had a problem making rice, no matter what variety I used nor how careless I was about measuring. The no-stick cooking bowl really is what it's supposed to be, and the retractable cord makes for easy storage. The rice cooks quickly, then stays warm and fluffy until the rest of your food is ready to serve.
