5.0 out of 5 stars Can't complain at all
I have had this carafe & a larger version for 10 years & still am amazed at how long the coffee stays hot! If you want the liquid to stay hot even longer, pre-heat the carafe with hot tap water. I do this on colder mornings when I know I want the coffee to stay hot until later in the day. Even my picky, engineer, coffee addict of a husband who prefers lawsuit hot coffee...

This review is from: Zojirushi Premium Thermal 1.85 liter Carafe, Brushed Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I purchased this product because I wanted a thermal carafe that would hold more than run of the mill carafes you find at your local discount store. At first the carafe performed beautifully. But after a few months use, I noticed that the stopper top mechanism was sticking. This is the pushbutton device that opens the stopper to dispense the liquid and closes at the touch of a button when you are done pouring and want to close the carafe to keep the heat in. I consulted the instruction sheet that accompanied the item and there were instructions for cleaning the stopper top to prevent the sticking. I followed the directions carefully but this did not cure the problem. So I went to Zojirushi's website and left a message for Customer Support, detailing my problem. After several weeks and no answer, this morning I called Zojirushi's toll free Customer Support number. I got the shock of my life when I was informed that all non-electric Zojirushi products do not carry any sort of warranty! I couldn't believe what I was hearing, so I checked the paperwork that accompanied the product and, sure enough, there is no warranty whatsoever. I informed the Customer Support person that I would never, ever, buy another Zojirushi product again.
While the carafe does an excellent job of keeping hot beverages hot for long periods of time, the fact that you have to insert your fingernail into the mechanism to get the carafe to close speaks loudly of a design defect that Zojirushi knows about (why else would they print detailed instructions on correcting the problem that are included with all new purchases?) and refuses to correct. Never again for me for a Zojirushi product.

I got 2 of these 3 weeks ago and now it is selling for $5 less which is very annoying. That aside, I was happy to report that the ones I got haven't had the problem of the other reviewers. My family have been used a Zojurushi thermal for over 20 years and it finally had to be retired since we cracked it. We use it to keep water hot. I did a test, 12 hours after I put boiling water in, I checked the termperature, it was 152F which is not boiling but hot enough to scorch my mouth. It does what it's supposed to and it has that industrial styling, if that's what you like.

3.0 out of 5 stars Glass Liner, January 9, 2007

We would suggest that this product be advertised specifically as having a "glass liner". We were looking for an altogether stainless steel carafe and thought we were getting one. Based on favorable reviews of this product, we would have kept it and given it a try even though it was not what we were expecting. HOWEVER, the "glass liner" was shattered when we received it, presumably in shipping?? We did not want to take another chance on it and so, we simply sent it back.

I bought this carafe for our office, at an engineering firm (with very picky people). It works excellently. The swivel base is nice, but not a big deal to me. The push button open/closed lid is outstanding. (I haven't had it long enough to see if it will start sticking. I have no problem with the idea of having to clean it periodically.)
As to temperature retention, you pour hot coffee in in the morning, you get hot coffee out in the afternoon. I have noticed that the ability to retain temperature is a function of the "fullness" of the container; two cups of coffee will not stay as hot as a full pot. If you want specifics, I would estimate heat losses for a full pot of liquid to be around 2 degrees per hour. For example, if you pour in 170F coffee, you'll get it out at 150F ten (10) hours later. (Testing a series of these carafe's temperature retention abilities would be an outstanding elementary or middle school science fair project!) I would expect 1/2 of a pot of coffee to lose about 3 degrees per hour and 1/4 pot to lose about 5. I doubt you'll find anything better than this.
The only thing I cannot attest to is the longevity of this item. It's obvious that you can't drop it (we engineers do like "virtually indestructable"), the "sticky button" issue has been documented (I'll have to wait and see) and I also wonder about the handle's attachment to the rest of it. (I think this could be retightened, if necessary, but that may be challenging). Bottom line: If you need a thermal carafe, stop reading and buy the d*mn thing!

1.0 out of 5 stars The top holds water or whatever????, December 27, 2007

Yes, it holds it's temperature but the top lid collects either condensation or whatever is in the carafe and you can't get it out.

Very unhealthy, it should be recalled and addressed.

For this price I expect better. This is poor design.

I just recently received this carafe and am VERY pleased with it. So far, it has kept our coffee piping hot for over 15 hours. I love the design and the swivel base. We have used the glass-lined plastic carafes in the past, and they just don't keep the coffee very hot. The Zojirushi Thermal Carafe is well worth the price. Excellent product!

Ordered this carafe because I could not find a carafe in any retail store that fit my needs. I absolutely love this product. The size fits a large pot of coffee........and the coffee stays hot. I am so pleased.....I am going to order the same product for Christmas gifts....and may even buy a second for myself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Zojirushi Thermal Pot, October 9, 2005

I am very pleased with my thermal pot and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good quality pot. I especially like the built in lazy susan. When I ordered the pot, I was not aware of this. The swivel bottom is a plus.
