Lioness shifter Zola has made a new life for herself and her new strength is what is needed when a member of her old pride comes seeking her help. This Southern Arcana short first appeared in the Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance 2 and was my favorite story in that anthology, I really liked Zola a great deal and since there was a preexisting relationship between the leads the romance worked in the short space. You don't have to be a follower of Rodger's Southern Arcana to enjoy this story.

This was a short read but it was very enjoyable. Don't let the page count fool you. You won't be disappointed. There were hot steamy scenes that left me breathless. Once I stopped reading, I immediately wanted to buy another book from this series.

I would rate this as more like a 2 1/2 - almost a 3 but not there. I downloaded this because the series sounded interesting and thought it would be a great way to find out more If this was meant to entice the reader into buying the next book in the series - it failed big time with me.

I understand that to write a short story that is developed enough to be really enjoyable would be a difficult task but I don't think an author should try it unless they can pull it off. There's just too many problems if they can't.

Pros:
- It's free
- Doesn't take long to read it
- I didn't hate it

Cons:
- Right after finishing it, my immediate thought was "That was rather choppy"
- I never felt anything for the main characters and could care less what happened to them.
- It was a "tell" more than "show" - trying to relate the facts that the reader needed in the least amount of words or actions.
- Not enough development so that everything seem rushed.

Bottom Line - it just failed to interest me enough to go on with the series. I'm also concern that if this is the writing style of the author - then the other books in the series may lack character and world development as well. While this book was free, I have read other free short stories that were quite sucessful in getting me addicted to a series. It just did not happen here.

More!! I loved this short story about Zola, a lioness mixed martial arts sensei in New Orleans. She was cast out of her mother's pride and has made her own way after training with the best martial arts masters in the world. Then her mother's bodyguard shows up at the door to her dojo seeking asylum. Her mother and most of the pride have been killed, and the rest are in danger. He asks her to take them in and take on her mother's role as alpha. He betrayed her in the past, but she learns that he had good reason for letting her go. Her mother had threatened her life if anyone helped her. If he stays, the attack team that killed her mother will come for him. If he goes, she will never know what might have been. This short story is a prequel to book #3, introducing Zola, but could be read as a standalone.

Not the strongest book in the series, but was interesting to see some of Zola's story unfold. If you're a fan of the series - you must read this. To me, this seemed like a good way to introduce another whole series intertwining with the Southern Arcana one. I really was left wanting a prequel, or simply more depth given to the Pride's world and characters. I am hoping more is learned about Zola's Pride in other books, or that the Pride gets a series of their own which intertwines with the current Southern Arcana series. Then again, I am always left feeling the same way about the magicians and others who are not wolves in this whole series. Fantastic plot lines and concepts, but there are a lot of characters and plots to keep track of as the series progresses.

This was a really good novella. (Surprise...Freebie!) Great characters and a page flying story line. This is definitely something I wouldn't mind reading again. It had action, emotions, some suspense, steamy scenes, and a great HEA. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the other books in this series. This made me want to pull and few Jackie Chan moves (and probably a muscle). ;) Fun to read and pretty much anytime. As it's a novella, it'd be good for one sitting or trying to draw it out and last for a while (if you can). It made me sweat, had my muscles twitching, my neurons firing, and my mind going faster than my fingers. (And not just for the 'interesting' scenes) Hint...hint! Totally Enjoy!

Zola's pride was... okay. I would have liked to see this story more developed. It was great in what the author included but it was short enough to not understand the who/what/when/why the story has occurred. I may need to read stories prior to this? I'm not certain, but as a new reader to Moria Rogers, and being this is my first book, I definitely felt lost in the story.
I'm giving her 3 stars as the book itself, the structure and story did pull me in. She has great writing in her story and I feel if it were more developed, it would have defintely hooked me and resulted in 4/5 stars. Give it a read in your time, I think you'll still enjoy it.

Zola's Pride by Moira Rogers is a great short read for those who like small quick books. In fact, I feel it was too short. The short story seemed to pull me in from the beginning although it seems to leave out a lot of information I would have loved to know. The plot seemed to be well thought out as was the characters.

With a touch of romance and a bit of action, I give this book four **** stars. I'm glad I had the opportunity to read it and I look forward to reading more of Moira Rogers work. I must say this author is talented and her work is intriguing.
