4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice App with some technical issues July 28, 2011
Verified Purchase
**This is mainly the original review that has been voted most helpful critical with the addition of the actual review and better rating and updated information.** The original is listed below, after the update.**

**Update** It seems that people have figured out a work around to get this app working correctly on most phones and testing it on my Thunderbolt apparently it works. Although my Transformer still "Force Closes" when tying to view videos and accessing some recipes. So, that aside, here's a proper quick review.

The proper rating for this app should be 5 stars, obviously if not for the technical issues it would be a 5 star as I think this has some real life value to it. Not only do you get seemingly great recipes but you also recieve lessons on what kind of equipment to use, how to use it, methods to improve your cooking, and more efficient ways of doing things.

But any app that requires a work around to work properly is a ratings fiasco waiting to happen. This is much better than a 3 star but for the time and energy that appears to have gone into this, they should have tested a little better.

But overall, I like the app, first impressions usually are everything, however, in this case, if you are one of the many that had/has this issue and rated this 1-star, try the workaround, once it's working, you can properly review it and maybe learn something. I know I did.

As far as the expense, well, for an app it seems expensive, especially for having 61 recipes or so(when the iCookbook is $5 for 2000 recipes), but the other things included in it, I'd say it's not horribly overpriced. A lot of production went into this as well, so I won't knock it too much.

4.0 out of 5 stars So much better on Kindle Fire than Android Phone November 15, 2011
Verified Purchase
I'd originally used this app on my smartphone, but I found the text and videos too small to be useful; so, I uninstalled it. Now, I'm using the app on my Kindle Fire, and I love it! Step-by-step text as well as video / picture instructions on how to prepare each dish including chopping / cooking methods for each ingredient. Thanks, Jamie!

The cook book is well laid out and it can be scrolled down to select the main course for your meal. Select the style and then select the actual meal you would like to prepare. Once you do that you get a Summary tab, a You'll Need tab, and a Steps tab.

The "You'll Need" tab is a nice grocery list of items that you will need to have on hand to prepare the meal. You can add the items to a shopping list on your device. You can select a meal size for 2 or 4 people. The Steps tab has step by step instructions on how to prepare the meal. You can scroll down the steps list but if you turn your device on its side into the landscape mode it will show the steps using text one step at a time. Double tap the screen it will show one step at a time using very nice and clear photos which are very useful in showing items like what size to chop an ingredient. The photos also have Jamie's voice talking to you at times with key details to remember. Rotate your device back into the portrait mode and you can see all of the access buttons and return to the home app screen.

The app worked with the WIFI turned off but you can play a list if videos on various items like how to make a risotto and you have to use a WIFI connection for the videos. If the WIFI is turned off the video will be queued up but not play until you create a WIFI connection.

The cookbook also has a list of essential cookware and tools you will need to prepare the meals.

This is a nice cookbook. It is not massive with the number of recipes but they are good ones and I love the photo guide to cooking on the process. It is very handy. All I miss is a nutritional value for each meal which for those watching their weight is important.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for Kindle Fire June 2, 2012

What a shame!! I am a big fan of Jamie Oliver and a big fan of my Kindle Fire, seems that this is not a good combination. The app does not properly work with Kindle Fire, there is no way to see the pictures of the step by step function. R

5.0 out of 5 stars amazon the app store, meet amazon the book store July 28, 2011

I would have kicked myself if I saw this app having been free and not snapped it up. What a wonderful way to approach cooking instruction. Your cookbook is your shopping list is your cooking show is in your pocket. This may actually qualify as something new, something original. I have never really followed mr Oliver, but I can already tell that some of these recipes will be my favorites.
So, the review... You get a cookbook, with lots of step by step recipes. You get a shopping list with easy add, that you can whip out at the store, then pop back in your pocket. You get lots of tasty pictures. And! You get videos on how to do the common steps, but with the techniques of a master to practice. All of this, and it's organized in such a way that you'd think there were lots of examples of similar products for it to pull from. But there aren't. This app will be a shining example of what value added, interactive, instructional, media will become
