How does this work?
Clicking the “Test drive now” button launches a copy of this app on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), a web service that provides on-demand compute capacity in the cloud for developers. When you interact with the simulated phone using your mouse and keyboard, we send those inputs over the Internet to the app running on Amazon EC2 — just like your mobile device would send a finger tap to the app. Our servers then send the video and audio output from the app back to your computer. All this happens in real time, allowing you to explore the features of the app as if it were running on your mobile device.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice App with some technical issues July 28, 2011
Verified Purchase
**This is mainly the original review that has been voted most helpful critical with the addition of the actual review and better rating and updated information.** The original is listed below, after the update.**

**Update** It seems that people have figured out a work around to get this app working correctly on most phones and testing it on my Thunderbolt apparently it works. Although my Transformer still "Force Closes" when tying to view videos and accessing some recipes. So, that aside, here's a proper quick review.

The proper rating for this app should be 5 stars, obviously if not for the technical issues it would be a 5 star as I think this has some real life value to it. Not only do you get seemingly great recipes but you also recieve lessons on what kind of equipment to use, how to use it, methods to improve your cooking, and more efficient ways of doing things.

But any app that requires a work around to work properly is a ratings fiasco waiting to happen. This is much better than a 3 star but for the time and energy that appears to have gone into this, they should have tested a little better.

But overall, I like the app, first impressions usually are everything, however, in this case, if you are one of the many that had/has this issue and rated this 1-star, try the workaround, once it's working, you can properly review it and maybe learn something. I know I did.

As far as the expense, well, for an app it seems expensive, especially for having 61 recipes or so(when the iCookbook is $5 for 2000 recipes), but the other things included in it, I'd say it's not horribly overpriced. A lot of production went into this as well, so I won't knock it too much.

4.0 out of 5 stars So much better on Kindle Fire than Android Phone November 15, 2011
Verified Purchase
I'd originally used this app on my smartphone, but I found the text and videos too small to be useful; so, I uninstalled it. Now, I'm using the app on my Kindle Fire, and I love it! Step-by-step text as well as video / picture instructions on how to prepare each dish including chopping / cooking methods for each ingredient. Thanks, Jamie!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for Kindle Fire June 2, 2012

What a shame!! I am a big fan of Jamie Oliver and a big fan of my Kindle Fire, seems that this is not a good combination. The app does not properly work with Kindle Fire, there is no way to see the pictures of the step by step function. R

5.0 out of 5 stars amazon the app store, meet amazon the book store July 28, 2011

I would have kicked myself if I saw this app having been free and not snapped it up. What a wonderful way to approach cooking instruction. Your cookbook is your shopping list is your cooking show is in your pocket. This may actually qualify as something new, something original. I have never really followed mr Oliver, but I can already tell that some of these recipes will be my favorites.
So, the review... You get a cookbook, with lots of step by step recipes. You get a shopping list with easy add, that you can whip out at the store, then pop back in your pocket. You get lots of tasty pictures. And! You get videos on how to do the common steps, but with the techniques of a master to practice. All of this, and it's organized in such a way that you'd think there were lots of examples of similar products for it to pull from. But there aren't. This app will be a shining example of what value added, interactive, instructional, media will become

1.0 out of 5 stars Auto Rotate Not Working April 29, 2012
By Jason
Verified Purchase
The auto rotate to landscape is not working on this app. One of the product feature on the Amazon app store described is rotate (in landscape mode) to see cooking steps with photos. But it doesn't work on my Kindle Fire. Why I am not able to get my refund when they mislead customer on their product information page?

1.0 out of 5 stars Major issues March 20, 2012
By Scott
Verified Purchase
I was excited to test out this app, but it was doomed out of the gate. Upon opening the app for the first time it stated 80mb of additional content needed to be downloaded. The problem is this fails immediately and there is no way to try and download again without force closing.

So basically I have a half baked app in which I can not actually get the additional content, images and videos. There is also the issue about the app not rotating from portrait to landscape - even when it is actually telling you to rotate to landscape. Oh, and the app loves to FC on its own. I would request a refund but Amazon makes it such a pain to get a refund it is not even worth it. Lesson learned.

I originally downloaded this for my phone when it was the free app of the day. It was alright then, though the videos and pictures weren't big enough to be super helpful; on the kindle fire however, it's almost perfect, with just two issues that I can note:

1) only allows one axis for portrait or landscape viewing, that's just not helpful.
2) videos never download when you queue them from the recipe pages, you have to remove them from the queue, go to the video page and set them to download again.

Outside of that, I love this app. I've made several of the recipes, they have all turned out very well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Limited Functionality March 12, 2012
Verified Purchase
The form of the app is great - good recipes, videos and tips. Unfortunately, the usefulness of the app is undercut by limited functionality on my Fire. As mentioned by several others, the screen will not orient to landscape in a recipe despite a persistent little animation above the recipe steps prompting one to turn to landscape to see the accompanying photos. I'm sure they're great - but I never could see any of them. In addition, the shopping list is essentially a frozen screen with a black line running down the center for me. Neither of the buttons at the bottom of the screen respond, and the ingredient lists for the recipes won't import. This would be so useful, if I could get it to work. Unfortunately, all my best efforts and those of a very helpful Amazon tech were useless. This is a problem on the developer end, and needs to be addressed in an update, please!
