This is the first and only video game that I ever bought simply because of the title, who could resist a game called "Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ"? I was honestly expecting a silly and probably terrible video game, but I was sorely mistaken. Basically, zombies have taken over Fairy Tale Land and it's up to Red to find the source of the outbreak and vanquish the baddies. Graphically it's a nice blend of 3D levels and 2D characters, bright and vibrant colors of course...it is set in fairy tale land afterall. This game is like the old-school arcade line-shooters, you can only move right or left and the screen scrolls down as you move forward. The gameplay is excellent, you can either tap the screen with the stylus or use the d-pad to move (you can use the xaby buttons if you're a lefty like me) and you simply touch the screen to shoot, sounds like an easy game right??? WRONG! The gameplay mechanics are great but trust me, this game is seriously difficult toward the end, thankfully it has a nice learning curve. You will have a great feeling of accomplishment once you beat this though, always nice to earn a victory! Of course to get the complete story you have to beat this on Hard mode...yikes, but you will be rewarded with a Boss-Rush mode and survival mode as well, all of which beef up the replay value. This game is definitely gonna be a cult classic, I would strongly recommend this to old-school gamers and shmup fans accross the board. Definitely right up there with Contra 4, Metal Slug 7 and Nanostray 2 as far as DS shooters go.

When I got back into games after taking a break for a while, the first one I bought for my DS was Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ. It got fairly good reviews, that's all I remembered. Nothing about how it played, or what it was about, just that it was pretty good. Once I popped it in and played through the first level, I knew I had bought something special. Take one part Metal Slug, one part B-horror movie story and two parts cute, and you get Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ. It's great in many ways, but there are a few things keeping it from getting 5 stars. But the main thing is, if you like shooters, this should be on your wishlist right now.

The story isn't anything special- Red goes to her grandma's house to bring her some goodies, when she gets attacked by zombies and monsters on her way there. All hell breaks loose, and Red takes it to 'em with her trusty machine gun. It turns out that everyone's turned into a zombie, except a random ninja, Momotaro. The two then go to see what's causing the problem, and try to fix it. Red and Momo run and gun their way through a good handful of levels and some pretty wacked out bosses before everything's said and done.

Playing the game is simple, though it might look weird at first. You move Red or Momo (you can select either to play as) using left and right on the d-pad. Your character is on the bottom screen, and they walk through the level as enemies and obstacles come at them. Touch the screen to shoot, double tap to launch grenades, and you can also select special weapons on the bottom screen as well. Simply lift the stylus off the screen to reload your regular weapon, which has unlimited ammo. If an enemy grabs you, tap them and you'll slap them silly with a melee attack. If a barricade is coming your way, tap your character to slide under it.

Everything sounds easy, and for the most part it is, but levels get increasingly difficult around world 3, and some people have given up in the second to last world because things got a bit hectic at that point. But I had fun playing every level and trying to outshoot everything. I love how cute Red is, moving her little legs seemingly in rhythm with the music. When you select a weapon, she'll say the name of it, similar to the announcer in the Metal Slug games. Bosses are very creative, and are based on various fairy tale characters like Gretel, Sleeping Beauty and the 3 little pigs. And the final boss, which you can only get to on Hard and Extreme modes, will really test your skill, especially since you won't have special weapons in that fight.

Visually, the game looks great and I love the art direction. The booklet alone is a visual treat- they took their time designing the enemies, and when translated to the game, everything retains its style. Blood and explosions are all over the place in Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ, and I wouldn't have it any other way. The music's not very memorable though, but most of the sounds you'll hear are guns and bombs and mosters moaning in pain, so it's not that big of a loss I guess.

So why just 4 stars when I praise it so much? A few reasons. First, the game suffers from some bad slowdown when a lot of enemies are on the screen. This is especially noticable in the Survival mode, where action is practically running at 3 frames a second. Granted, this does give you some time to make decisions easier while everything's going slow, but I'm sure they could've improved this. Next, there's no score. You just shoot monsters and get no points or any kind of score at the end showing how many guys you wasted. If you miss a few, it doesn't matter most of the time because the levels scroll. There are only certain points in the levels where you'll -have- to take out everyone. I also don't like how tapping the screen launches grenades. There were many times when I was just letting go to reload quickly and then get back to shooting, and I'd waste a grenade or two on a regular enemy. I wish the designers would've issued grenades to a button on the DS instead. Finally, and this isn't much of a gripe- Momotaro. The designers said in an interview that the only reason he was included was to appeal to Japanese gamers more. And yes, I can see that since he's such a cliche- a mess of every Japanese hero you could think of, and it's funny. But he really doesn't fit in with the game very well, and he plays identically to Red, but with a shooting star gun instead of a machine gun.

This game would be 5 stars with those minor problems fixed, and would get 5 stars even with those problems if they had included a 2 player mode somehow. I still don't have any regrets buying this game, and hope more people buy it, supporting the developers to show that things like this CAN sell. While not a game with much replay, this is one I go back to frequently just to kill some time shooting zombies up while looking at a cute heroine.

This game is pretty fun.
I had been on the fence with it for some time and I am thrilled that after buying it I found it surpassed my expectations and then some. It has got bad dialog, voices are stupid bad, over the top characters, zombies, and fairy tale characters gone very wrong. Whats not to love?
It plays much like an old arcade shooter retooled for the DS. The game screen constantly scrolls upward, or to the side, with the players character at the base of the lower screen. Enemies pop up in the distance and right in front of you at times. Some bosses are larger and fit both screens. The shooting/aiming mechanics are similar to a light gun game (house of the dead for example)but using the stylus instead of a gun, if you can picture that. Players also have to dodge left to right using the directional pad or Y and A buttons.
On the down side some of the controls suffer from the touch element. Primarily the bombs that you would use by tapping the touch screen twice which is very similar to reloading.
This is a fun game. The mechanics, graphics and story are interesting enough to me to keep it close to the top in my stack of games. Its got zombies y'all! Get this game, you will probably be happy you did. I am.

I also bought this game purely for the title. I too could not resist!

The game is surprisingly engaging but also appropriately silly. Each level has made me laugh at least twice so far due to its absurdity. The game play is a couple steps above "simple" as well. It's "just" an arcade shooter, where you only move left and right, but the zombies arrive in force and you need to pick your battles. Even the first level required some consideration of which weapon is best for the job. (Shotgun or automatic? Then there's the flame thrower and laser gun...)

It's a fun game - stupendously ridiculous and not as simple as you might think. Plus, how can you go wrong with a title like "Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ!"

Just what I expected I did not really like the case it came with. It did come with cover art and manual which were awesome. Overall I was very satisfied with this product. The game came very fast within the week

I bought this game not knowing how good it would be. I had never heard of Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ, but being a staunch Nintendo DS player, I decided to buy it. The story is very intense! Who knew old fairy tales could be turned into something so bad ass? As a game, it's very challenging. Each boss has a different pattern of attack, and you have to learn very quickly to avoid or die! I've beat it in normal mode, but I have yet to beat it in Hard! This game is a must buy for anyone who loves the Nintendo DS!

I purchased this at Pamida for 15.99 and am glad I bought it there after seeing what it's going for online here. It's a fun simple to control game. If you like to shoot zombies and blow things up it's a lot of fun. It's not that easy as others are saying on here. U still have to duck and move Little Red out of the way of flying skulls and fast moving zombies while shooting and slicing away. Fun game highly entertaining just look in the bargain bin at local stores and save about ten dollars.

I absolutely love this game. The game play is easy, nothing the least bit complicated so anyone can play it. It's not the hardest game in the world, nor is it the easiest. The levels can be a bit difficult, however it's very very addictive. I couldn't put my DS down for days when I first got my game. I love it. I'm glad that I purchased this game, I was really surprised that something that caught my eye by the name alone was as much fun and addictive as this game is!

Paid 5.00 for it new, I should've known better. Has back n forth on bottom of screen like an old command and conquer game for nintendo, the original! Totally boring, even my 11 yr old son hates it. Too late to return it. Stuck with it.
