THE ON-THE-GROUND SPIRITUAL GAME,
By A Customer
This review is from: Zombie (Audio CD)
For those who were fortunate to have experienced Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's music and social commentary over the years,"Zombie" will be a familiar tune. Originally released around 1976, it is arguably one of the late Chief Priest's best recorded songs, both lyrically and instrumentally. Fela is at his rebelious peak, heaping insults on the Nigerian military government and chastising 'the zombies' for their inability to "think." The Africa 70 band is also at the peak of it's musical creativity and prowess, delivering a breath taking tempo that challenged Fela's sensuous dancers to the limit for many years at the African Shrine and at various musical shows. Of particular note are the precision and sharpness of the horn section's delivery on "Zombie", one of the best tracks ever from Africa's greatest music machine.

Poor Quality Mastering,

This is widely considered to be a classic album, so if you plan on buying it, do yourself a favor and seek out another edition. This edition is poorly digitally mastered and features quite a bit of annoying digital clipping, harsh crackles that distract from the music. You might be tempted by the lower than usual price, but you'll get what you pay for. If you're reading this at all, I don't have to tell you much about the music. My simple advice is to avoid this edition.

Fela is really the ultimate in Nigeria's music scene. He has really, really given so much. I wish there were more like him.

To listen is to believe, you have to be prepared for the voyage of discovery this great man takes you on. It really is spiritual. BABA 70 celebrates the joys of beign an African and expresses his despair at the rape of the dignity of Africans. This will open your eyes and your soul. It is truly great music.

For those who were fortunate enough to see the Abami- Eda himself live, would have appreciated what a Great Philosopher he was.I saw him performing live in concert as a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 1988 and he took everyone on a roller coaster ride with his yabis, and then the music took over.A great album.

VINTAGE BABA! A MUST HAVE!,

This review is from: Zombie (Audio CD)
Fela known also as 'BABA' to his hardcore following, constantly infuriated the predominantly Military Governments of Nigeria with his fearless mocking and critism of the Nigerian Establishment Zombie's mocking of the concept of 'odas is odas' (orders are orders) is rendered in a robust and energetic style.'Trouble sleep' one of my favourites draws from the most amusing anologies to question the life of the poverty stricken in nigeria(..when cat sleep rat go bite im tail wetin e dey find?) e.t.c. Easily the best introduction to 'BABA' for the beginer.

What do u want me to say? He was the greatest. I have this album and he explains his suffering and unhappiness against the Nigerian military. It is a dancing as well as relaxing CD. Get it or get out of the world, thats the only way I can describe the album.
