5.0 out of 5 stars Deadliest Warrior has nothing on Zombie Fight Night..., September 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Zombie Fight Night: Battles of the Dead (Kindle Edition)
"Deadliest Warrior" is one of the hottest TV shows on Spike TV in the US. In it, fantasy match ups go down featuring armies, legendary fighters, warrior tribes, and heroes of the fight world. With scientific testing, they figure out who would win in a fight using a computerized algorithm with the information they attain.

AP Fuchs takes that concept and rocks it, even before the program was born, and brings a zombie slant to the concept. Zombie Fight Night features a slew of fantasy match ups of fighting warriors taking on zombies. But it goes deeper than that.

The story itself revolves around a dude named Mick who got in over his head at this zombie money-fight arena. Mick gets in debt so bad that he is forced by the manical Russian owner of the fight club to bet on the fights not just for his money, but for his own life.

It's then that the fights become the centerpiece of the story. Ninjas, superheros, werewolves, robots, Bruce Lee, sumo... pretty much any legendary fighter worth his weight in blood is booked to fight the zombies that range from shamblers to runners.

It's with that background that Fuch's takes great glee in putting the matchups together. Providing just enough background on the people fighting the zombies to care whether they win or lose, the story jumps from Mick's decision to who he wants to bet on to the fights. Blood, skulls, and zombies get crushed in specatular fashion, leading up to a wild swerve finish I didn't see coming.

I bought it a while back when it was on sale for a buck. It was worth every penny. At $2.99 on Kindle, if you like "Deadliest Warrior" and zombie gore, then this is the book for you.

i write humourous zombie books, but recently i was in the mood for some serious zombie action... that's when i stumbled onto zombie fight night via a friend's suggestion... this book is jam packed with fresh, crazy, nonstop action! its as if the movie bloodsport had a one night stand with fangora! the author's play by play of the action was seamless and smart. the internal and external dialogues were intense, fitting and never got in the way of the kickbuttness of the fighting--only added to it. i rarely suggest books to friends unless a book really stands out... this book i posted on my facebook page!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dream match ups all in one book!, June 18, 2010

The description tells you everything. I don't need to repeat that. Now how did it play out? Very damn well thank you! The noirish side story of the losers last chance at winning plays very well around the exciting zombie fights. Almost every creature you can think of takes on zombies. The matches are great, it may look like zombies don't stand a chance but they do surprise you. Hey the Undertaker and Mankind can't top this. A really unique and well written take on the zombie genre. Gotta love A.P. for coming up with something totally unique in a genre that's been written to death. One of my fav zombie books I've read so far. Pick it up, it is a blast, you won't be able to wait and see what the next match is!

5.0 out of 5 stars Are you ready to Rumble?, April 12, 2010
No one knows how the dead rose from their graves to devour the living, and after a decade of a living hell, no one cares. All most care about these days is getting their pound of flesh...literally.

Before the living/dead war, Tony Sterpanko was a wealthy man, and now that the living have won the war, he has found a way to increase his wealth. He has created an arena where survivors can claim vengeance; dreggs of society can become heroes; and poor men and women can turn a quick buck, but at Zombie Fight Night money isn't the only thing people are gambling with.

Zombie Fight Night is a fast paced, hard hitting yarn that had me turning the pages with childish glee. AP Fuchs has written a unique story, a throwback to the classic Kung Fu movies and Creature Double Features I used to watch as a boy. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Sorry to use such a cliche title but it fits this book perfectly.

I can't recommend this book strongly enough to fans of action films, ufc/martial arts or even those who enjoy video games like Mortal Kombat. Its a total bloodbath featuring match-ups from all our geekiest fantasies, wrapped around a plot involving a gambler who didn't know when to quit. Where else are you going to see robots, vikings or a sasquatch vs zombies? There's even a (frankly depressing) cameo from Fuch's Axiom-Man character. This novel is pure, unabashed fun for the (mature, this book is extremely gory) kid at heart. I read it straight through in one sitting with a big grin on my face. I can tell that Mr. Fuchs had a blast writing this, it shows.

As of this writing the kindle edition is only 99 cents, its an absolute steal for some of the most fun I've had in quite some time. I even found myself playing along and mentally gambling on the fights before they started, weighing the pros and cons of each fighter. No book has ever really engaged me like that.
Id love to see a sequel one day.

The title of this book, "Zombie Fight Night: Battles of the Dead", tells you exactly what you will find in this enjoyable volume by Mr. Fuchs. This action packed novel gives you the front row seat to witness some of the confrontations that all good fantasy and horror geeks have argued about for decades: Zombies, a werewolf, Big Foot, a wrestler, a ninja, a super hero, a vampire... even Bruce Lee is in the fray! The fights are knitted by a really interesting storyline that carries you along this crazy event.

Place your bets, it's show time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Zombies vs Everything Awesome, March 17, 2011
By
This review is from: Zombie Fight Night: Battles of the Dead (Kindle Edition)
Zombie Fight Night could best be summed up as Bloodsport meets Zombies meets everything awesome. What does "everything awesome" entail? You will see in a minute. This book seems like it would be the imaginings of a horror fan that loves fighting games like Soul Calibur and Tekken. I'm pretty sure I spent many nights with friends, sharing a beverage or two, talking about who would win difference fight scenarios. This book not only contains some ridiculously entertaining scenarios, but it also has a pretty good dramatic story that leads us to them.
The book takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in the year of 2027. The story follows a man named Mick Chelsey, who is a degenerate gambler at the Zombie Fight Night arena. The fight promoter, Tony Sterpanko, has captured Mick with the assistance of his hired goons. Mick owes Tony over $800,000, and being the nice guy that Tony is, he is giving him one last chance to go back to the arena and win back the money Mick owes him. If Mick cannot win back the money he owes Tony, then Mick is as good as dead, and so is his wife.
Mick goes to the arena to attempt to make things right. This is when the insanity begins. Zombie Fight Night is exactly what it sounds like, zombies fighting. Here's the kicker. The zombies don't only fight humans. They fight a wide array of characters that include a vampire, a Sasquatch, a robot, and a ninja. Actually, there more opponents than that, but I just wanted to give you a taste of what you're in for if you read the book. One of the only criticisms I can give the book is there is a lot of different fights on the fight card, and while each fight is fairly unique, part of me wished a couple of these fights would've been eliminated and more time be devoted to our main character dealing with his self-induced problems. That being said, I enjoyed each fight scenario, so my criticism is very slight.
I really enjoyed the way the book wraps up. The ending was very fitting, and it was exactly what I was looking for. The story is the equivalent to those 80's action movies where the focus should be on the action, and the drama is a device to move the story along to the next action sequence. It was a nice change of pace from the books I have been reading lately and I'm glad I had the chance to dive into an action book with blood, gore, and some crazy fight match ups that were pretty entertaining.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I am going to rate this book a 6 ½. I keep debating if I should bump up my rating a little, and as the book settles in, I think I will appreciate it more. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of over the top action films. If you're looking for a fun book that you can pick up and read in a day, then I say go out and buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Let's Get ready to Rumble!, June 7, 2010

Nick Cato "nickyak" (Staten Island, NY United States) - See all my reviews
Love 'em or hate 'em, every guy (at one time or another) has enjoyed an action flick, be it Stallone rescuing M.I.A.'s, Van Damme kick boxing his way to glory, or Seagal cleaning his 'hood of criminal scum. Fuch's latest novella is inspired by these testosterone-fueled classics, only he has added plenty of monsters, a little scifi and some fantasy into the mix.

In 2037 AD, 10 years after a chemical spill in the the middle east caused the dead to rise, a slick entrepreneur named Sterpanko has found a way to capitalize on the situation: he has created The Blood Bay Arena, where fighters of all kinds (be they human or monster) come to do battle with fast zombies (Sprinters) and/or slow zombies (Shamblers). A space-time continuum theory is given to explain why all kinds of creatures now exist to battle the undead, but despite this slight fantasy element of the story, you'll be drawn in by the plight of gambling addict Mick to care all too much . . . especially when the fights get underway.

Mick owes Sterpanko over $800,000. Sterpanko grants him one last shot to pay him back: by betting on a series of fights without messing up. With possible spies sitting around him, Mick begins to bet on some of the wildest fights I've read in quite some time: Vampires, werewolves, bigfoot, a 7-foot robot . . . even Bruce Lee and Fuch's own superhero Axiom Man make appearances in the Arena, battling zombies in action-packed and gore-filled bouts.

Things get a bit hairy when Mick sees his wife with Sterpanko and discovers the man sitting next to him, an alleged ally named Jack, is a Sterpanko plant.

ZOMBIE FIGHT NIGHT, with its short and quick-paced chapters, is a lot of fun and provides countless cheap thrills. While much of it reads like a novelization of a Mortal Combat game, I'm betting anyone who has secretly cheered through a late night action or zombie film will leave this read with a satisfied grin.
