If you've read Max Brook's "World War Z", or J.L.Bourne's "Day by Day Armageddon" the zombie "infection" starts in China both times I wonder what draws these author's to pick China?

That and their appalling cleanliness standards, coupled with the fact that they actually could be fooling around with biological warfare...Who knows...S.A.R.S. might've been one.

Agreed. Add to that the ruthlessness of their government, their lack of concerns for individual lives, their superiority complex and, as previously mentioned, the possibility that, with all the wealth pouring into China these days, the credits that could get to the development of NBC (keep only the B of the acronym, for Bacteriological!) weapons must be paramount, and you've got a pretty solid explanation for picking up China repeatedly as the origin of the pandemic...

China has been implicated in the evolution of a lot of illnesses (including most strains of flu) because of: 1) enormous human population, more chances for mutation, 2) lack of hygiene and a good medical infrastructure for most of the country, and 3) large areas where humans, pigs and poultry live in close proximity (so that evolving diseases can "jump species"). Bio warfare experimentation would be the icing on the cake!

Howard Beale says:
There's also the dramatic element. Despite the recent rise of China, Inc, there's still a sense to most audiences of a mystique to China, especially the remote inner provinces where many peasants live lives relatively unchanged since the Ming dynasty. In reality, I'd expect something like this come out of a place like Africa; someplace with a nearly totally broken central government, deep poverty and the kind of social chaos where a small initial outbreak would be confused with local militia activity. I think the Chinese government is still too powerful and willing to chop off a hand to save an arm.
