Editorial Reviews

2008 is the 40th anniversary of Night of the Living Dead . Here is your chance to revist the 25th anniversary celebration an extraordinary affair back in 1993. If you were lucky enough to attend this mind-boggling event back in 1993, you'll want this lavishly produced documentary to help you relive the three days of fun and excitement - and maybe to spot yourself hobnobbing with George Romero, John Russo, Russ Streiner, Bill Hinzman, Karl Hardman, Marilyn Eastman, Kyra Schon, Keith Wayne, Judy O'Dea and Judy Ridley. If you WEREN'T lucky enough to be there, this is the next best thing! A silver anniversary bash for a genuine horror classic!

Zombie Jamboree (John Russo, 1993)

For a film by John Russo, who's been around the indie movie business for decades (and was involved with the most popular and influential indie flick ever made), Zombie Jamboree is an incredibly amateur piece of filmmaking. Granted, since it's a documentary, that shouldn't stop anyone who's interested in the subject matter from hunting a copy down, and I suspect there are a whole lot more people interested in the subject matter than the print run of this obscure, long out-of-print VHS would imply: it's footage from the convention held in honor of the 25th anniversary of one of the most influential movies ever made, Night of the Living Dead.

If you've seen con videos before, there's nothing here that will surprise you; a lot of footage of panel discussions and folks who look a whole lot different than they did when they appeared in the movie. As a con doc, it completely delivers; I'm just surprised that the guy who's written a number of books on film theory and practice (including The Complete Night of the Living Dead Filmbook and How to Make a Movie for $10,000) didn't try to do too much in the editing room to, for example, master the sound or polish up the edits. But the content? You can't go wrong. A must for fans of Night of the Living Dead. ***
