Not smart, edgy or funny enough.,

Look. I'm the natural audience for Jamie. I'm liberal, I'm an atheist, love comedy, nothing shocks or offends me. I just didn't think the material was very polished or the delivery very crisp or interesting. I've never seen him live, and perhaps that makes a big difference, but from what I hear on Zombie Jesus, I'm not sure I would go out of my way to see him. None of which is to say that there are no laughs on Zombie, or that his targets aren't dead on. Mormons. Sarah Palin. Fred Phelps. Of course, they deserve the savage treatment they come in for, and they have set themselves up as punchlines. Maybe that's part of the problem. Easy targets, paper-cut deep commentary. Few clever turns of phrase or novel observations or startling ideas. Just some very pedestrian ranting punctuated by self-conscious profanity. By far my favorite bit was "Soulmates," which makes the fresh and funny observation that couples who seem most sold on how destiny has brought them together might be least secure in the actual foundations of their relationship. And for all the wannabe offensive album cover art and title and everything, the actual bit on Zombie Jesus is pretty tame. Gee, if he comes back, maybe he'll be angry at humans for having killed him. Sam Kinnison and even freaking ROBIN WILLIAMS were making sharper Jesus jokes than that a couple of decades ago. Having maybe damned with faint praise, I will say that Jamie shows considerable promise, and he does something rather well that I can't do at all. So I'm not well-positioned to judge, except that I know some really funny comics, and I was hoping that this guy--whose worldview and values so closely approximate my own--might become a new favorite, based on what I'd read. If "Zombie" is typical, that doesn't seem very likely.

Jamie Kilstein is one of the best comedians around. End of.
This CD is not for the faint hearted, he shots hard and fast and always hits the target. Whether it's Sarah Palin, Fred Phelps or his own family this comedian nails it every time. Oh, and he swears. Just a little. Not so you'd notice really. Ok maybe you will. Can't recommend it enough.

The title of the review says it all.
I caught Jamie on the Greenroom and he is amazing talent and went out and bought this CD to hear more of his act. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did and continue to every time I hear it.

***If you're looking for smart stand up comedy you won't find it here. This guy is just a wanna be who thinks he's smart.
Save your money. Buy a CD of Dave Attell, Jim Norton or Kurt Metzger. They are all New York City comedians that you can actually find performing in New York City comedy clubs on a regular basis and they push the envelope way more than Kilstein pretends to. P.S. if you dare criticize this CD Kilstein will e-mail Amazon and demand that they take down your review. LMAO! Thus why you don't see any negative reviews. Apparently anyone who doesn't find him funny is wrong and must be deleted. Gee you'd expect a thicker skin from a guy who trains MMA wouldn't you? ROTFLMAO!!! |
